  • Baseball season gets off to a rocky start when the minor league Durham Bulls' new catcher, "Crash" Davis (Kevin Costner), punches out the cocky young pitcher "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins), he's just been hired to train. Then sexy groupie Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) informs both men that each session she chooses one player to share her bed - and help him mature -- and that Nuke and Cash are this year's "draft picks."

After Crash passes on the offer, Nuke eagerly enlists as Annie's summer fling…until Crash convinces Nuke that sex with Annie will jinx the Bulls' newfound winning streak. Does Crash really want to preserve the team's winning ways, or is this veteran free agent looking for a more long-term contract with Annie?

A mixture of a cleverly written old-style romantic comedy with a decidedly sexy look at minor league ball, this 1988 film is quite entertaining, thanks to some terrific work both in front of and behind the camera. Costner, Robbins and Sarandon deliver terrific takes on their characters that have been created by writer/director Ron Shelton (a former minor league player himself who went on to write and direct films such as "Blaze" and "White Men Can't Jump"), while the filmmaker's dialogue is a treat all on its own (the original screenplay garnered an Oscar nomination).

Near perfectly blending material for men (the baseball scenes) and women (the romantic comedy triangle element), the witty and literate film probably still stands as one of Costner's best efforts, paired up real life lovers/partners Sarandon and Robbins, and is engaging and enjoyable from the first on and off field pitch to the last.
