  • Sam (Hugh Grant) has it all - a wonderful girlfriend, a successful career as a child psychologist, a San Francisco apartment with a great view, and a red Porsche convertible. But he's faced with getting something he never though he wanted when his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) tells him she's pregnant. The news sends the unflappable psychologist into a panic. Ultimately pushed over the edge by the obnoxious, happy-go-lucky couple (Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack) that seems to follow him everywhere, Sam is in danger of losing his mind and girlfriend. He has just nine months - give or take a week, according to their crazy Russian gynecologist (Robin Williams) - to grow up.

Fresh off his success in "Four Weddings and a Funeral," Grant found himself in this 1995 film, yet another charming comedy based on an original French film (in this case, "Neuf Mois"). While it's certainly not high art, the film offers enough fun and funny moments (particularly from Robins as a wacky, foreign OBGYN), along with a terrific cast - that also includes Jeff Goldblum - to make it more than easy to watch. While it gets a bit goofy at times in its attempts at inducing laughter, is often rather predictable, and manages to subdue the incredible talents of Moore in the standard pregnant woman role, the film is nevertheless amusing and entertaining enough to make it worth recommending.

  • In this amusing farce, three of Hollywood's leading female stars from the 1970s and '80s -- Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton - live every secretary's dream as they turn the tables on their boss and turn their male controlled workplace into a model office. At Consolidated, the office manager (Tomlin), the vice president's secretary (Parton), and the newest employee (Fonda) become great friends as they share their resentment about their egotistical, sexist boss (Dabney Coleman). When they inadvertently get a chance to take revenge, they institute a host of popular office procedures in his absence - even as their scheme spins wildly out of control.

Perhaps something of a source of inspiration for the disgruntled employee-based comedy, "Working Girl," that followed it eight years later, this 1980 feminist revenge picture plays off the chauvinistic attitudes and behavior that many women have experienced at some point in their working lives.

Accordingly, and with Coleman playing such a cad that we don't care what happens to him, it's easy to root for the women to succeed in their scheme, even if the script by Patricia Resnick and director/co-writer Colin Higgins gets too loose and out of control in the film's second half. The result is a goofy but engaging and entertaining film that certainly benefits from terrific performances by Tomlin and Parton (who was making her acting debut - her title song for the film received an Oscar nomination) and a fun, underlying plot of taking matters in one's own hands.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS
    [THE Length: 99 minutes

  • Charming and bittersweet, this modern-day romantic comedy starring Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo and Ben Chaplin explores the beguiling perils of mistaken identity. Abby (Garofalo), a savvy, witty veterinarian who hosts her own radio talk show, is anything but confident when it comes to love. A petite brunette, she describes herself as tall and blonde when Brian (Chaplin), a caller who is smitten with her radio persona, asks her on a date. She then talks her tall, blonde neighbor Noelle (Thurman) into assuming her identity, setting off an escalating series of hilarious and romantic crises.

A twist on the Cyrano de Bergerac story (that has inspired many a film including 1987's witty "Roxanne"), the 1996 film featured Garofalo in her first leading role, and she takes her character and runs with it, creating a fun and funny persona that makes the film work. With good performances from Thurman and Chaplin who make up the rest of the story's triangular relationship, and a decent script by Audrey Wells, the film might not be completely novel and does require some suspension of disbelief to fully enjoy it.

Yet, it's just so gosh darn charming, warm-hearted and sweet - not to mention that it also includes a lot of viewer friendly animals and their behavior -- that you can't help but forgive and/or overlook any of its minor problems. The film was also a nice career turnaround for director Michael Lehmann who had debuted with the terrific "Heathers," but then stumbled with efforts such as "Meet the Applegates," "Hudson Hawk" and "Airheads." While it's no comedy masterpiece, it's certainly funny and appealing enough that most viewers will enjoy what it has to offer.

  • Nominated for six Academy Awards, director Mike Nichol's witty, romantic look at life in the corporate jungle stars Melanie Griffith as Tess McGill, an ambitious secretary with a unique approach for climbing the ladder to success. When her classy, but villainous boss (Sigourney Weaver) breaks a leg skiing, Tess simply takes over her office, her apartment and even her wardrobe. She then creates a deal with a handsome investment banker (Harrison Ford) that will either take her straight to the top - or finish her off for good.

While Griffith has often been wrongly cast in certain films and thus occasionally comes off as grating in them, she and the role in this 1988 film are a perfect fit. Playing off the sympathetic and universal bit of a hard-working but under-appreciated worker, Griffith delivers a fabulous performance (that earned her an Oscar nomination along with Cusack and Weaver for their supporting roles) in what surprisingly turned out to be a very good film (that also earned a Best Picture nomination while director Nichols earned one for his efforts).

With a terrific and witty script by Kevin Spade (that smartly plays off a twist on the old Cinderella theme) and all around, solid comedic performances from the wonderful supporting cast (including Ford who returned to the comedy genre for the first time since 1979's "The Frisco Kid"), the picture works incredibly well and is highly entertaining.
