  • Title Summaries:

Bus Stop: Marilyn Monroe shines as the beautiful chanteuse, Cheri, in this touching American love sotry based on the award wining play by William Inge (Splendor in the Grass). When an innocent cowboy, Bo Decker (Don Murray, Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nominee) decides to marry the girl of his dreams, sexy nightclub singer Cheri, it never occurs to him that she might not feel the same way! During the course of a long, snowy night in Kansas, Bo struggles to understand the nature of true love and win Cherie's heart. Bus Stop boasts an all-star cast, and features Marilyn's memorable edition of "That Old Black Magic" in the role some consider the best of her career.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: These glamorous showgirls have everything a girl could want - except engagement rings! In a quest for true love, Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) and her gold digger pal Dorothy (Jane Russell) set sail on a luxury-liner bound for France. But their plan hits rocky waters when a manipulative detective, an over-aged, over-sexed millionaire (Charles Coburn) and the entire men's Olympic team try to put an anchor in their marriage-minded mischief. A wild and joyously funny ride, from celebrated director Howard Hawks, the film features the classic showtunes: "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," "Bye, Bye Baby" and "Ain't There Anyone Here For Love."

How to Marry a Millionaire: Marilyn delivers one of the finest comedic performances of her career in this outrageously funny film co-starring Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall. The three beautiful models plan to snag rich husbands by pooling their funds and renting a posh Manhattan penthouse in which to lure their victims. What follows is a series of near-marital mishaps where love prevails over money, proving that even gold diggers sometimes have hearts of gold. Written by Nunnally Johnson, the film was the first comedy to use the widescreen CinemaScope process.

The Seven Year Itch: A husband of seven years, alone in New York while his family vacations, fantasizes about an affair with a television model and develops the Seven Year Itch. Tortured by guilt, he envisions so many dire consequences that he finally runs off to join his wife. Tom Ewell and Marilyn Monroe star in this tremendously funny comedy that was produced and directed by Billy Wilder and includes Monroe's famous white dress and windy subway grate scene.

There's No Business Like Show Business: An all-star cast that includes Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, Johnnie Ray and Mitzi Gaynor spark this dynamic Irving Berlin musical that depicts the trials and triumphs of a veteran vaudeville family. Molly (Merman) and Terry Donahue (Dailey) start out as a duo and keep adding kids to the act until they finally become The 5 Donahues. Their busy, sometimes tumultuous lives aren't always easy, but the Donahues have plenty of love to get them through the hard times, and more than enough talent to keep them on top. Highlighted by one classic Irving Berlin song after another and an array of dazzling production numbers, this upbeat, utterly delightful tale of life on the stage proves, beyond any doubt, that There's No Business Like Show Business.

  • Theatrical trailer for this film as well as "Avanti," "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes," "The Fortune Cookie," "Kiss Me Stupid," "Irma La Douce" and "The Apartment."
  • When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest - and homeliest - members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect...until a lovelorn singer, Sugar Cane (Marilyn Monroe) falls for "Josephine," and ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for "Daphne," and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax.

Rated as the best comedy of all time by the American Film institute, this 1959 film - helmed by legendary director Billy Wilder ("The Apartment," "Sunset Blvd.") who co-wrote the script with I.A.L. Diamond ("The Apartment," "The Fortune Cookie") - has delighted audiences for decades through is mixture of naughtiness and innocence and garnered 6 Oscar nominations (winning for Best Costume Design).

Based on the German film "Fanfares of Love, the picture effectively utilizes the mistaken identity plot - this time with men posing as women - and benefits from terrific work both behind and in front of the camera, with terrific performances from Lemmon, Curtis and Monroe in what's arguably the best work of her cinematic career.

Obviously a source of inspiration for latter "dress up" films such as "Tootise" and "Mrs. Doubtfire," the picture is a delight to watch throughout and comes highly recommended.

While I can't say that I ever watched the series and this collection obviously won't be of much interest to those in the same boat, fans of the series will probably love owning it.

  • Spanning five years approximately in the middle of writer/director and performer Woody Allen's long, illustrious and still ongoing career, this second DVD collection of his films appropriately features five of his works. Not as well known or remembered among mainstream viewers as many of his other pictures, but still critically acclaimed by many critics, the collection includes "September" (1987), "Another Woman" (1988), "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (1989), "Alice" (1990) and "Shadows and Fog" (1992).

Allen wrote and directed all five (and appeared in "Crimes" and "Shadows"), and garnered writing and directing Oscar nominations for "Crimes" and a writing one for "Alice." Like most of his works - comedic or dramatic -- the films are all technically well-made and feature terrific and often incredibly deep casts. At the same time, however, the dramatic ones are more likely to entertain Allen's diehard fan base rather than everyday viewers who might occasionally/often find the subject matter and Allen's approach a bit highbrow, depressing and/or drab.

Certainly not as good as some of the writer/director/star's other films, this collection nonetheless is a worthwhile addition to a collector's library if they're fans of the filmmaker and want to follow and/or examine how his works had changed twenty some years after he first broke onto the scene.
