Released to coincide with the big screen, theatrical "remake" based on the beloved show, this set proves the old adage of leaving well enough alone. While not a classic (in terms of sitcoms of all time or even its own specific era), the series (that ran through the 1964 to 1972 TV seasons) was a personal favorite of yours truly.
Part of that was due to the "magic" contained within, the zany supporting characters (specifically Paul Lynde who first appeared as a different character before reappearing as the comically snide Uncle Arthur), and the various predicaments that Sam would find herself in and then have to get out of (with or without magic), all of which appealed to a kid's point of view.
Yet, viewed today, the series' various episodes still work quite well today - for both kids and adults alike -- in terms of delivering fairly wholesome and quite enjoyable entertainment. With terrific performances by the lovely Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York (who was replaced after the 1969 season) and Agnes Moorehead as the "perfect" mother-in-law stereotype, you'll be better served with this offering than its recent big screen adaptation.

Following the success of the first three seasons of "Seinfeld" in one compilation package, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released Season 4 by itself, and for good reason. Having debuted in 1990, the show spent the next several seasons establishing its sense of humor and fan base, both of which took off in year four.
Arguably the smartest, most well-written and funniest sitcom of all time, "Seinfeld" is one of those rare TV commodities that deposited words and phrases into the national lexicon ranging from "Master of my domain" to "Bubble boy" and much more.
It's also one of the few shows - notwithstanding sci-fi series and their fanatics - where the titles, such as those above or "The Junior Mint" bring back a flood of funny memories where viewers can remember most if not all of the show.

Bill Murray stars as John Winger who loses his job, his car, his apartment and his girlfriend - all in one day. His solution to the desolation of his life is to hitch up with the Army, talking his friend Russell (Harold Ramis) into enlisting with him. John convinces Russell that they'll get in shape, travel the world, and, most importantly, meet girls.
John and Russell find basic training a snap: they are arrested twice, have endless run-ins with their drill sergeant (Warren Oates) and get into a big mess at a female mud-wrestling match. While in boot camp, wise guy John continues to tangle with his by-the-book Sergeant, only to become the unofficial leader for his platoon, made up mostly of other misfits and assorted losers. After somehow making it through graduation, they are given a special assignment but, thanks to John's romantic interest in a pretty MPO, the other men wind up behind the Iron Curtain until John, Russell, their dates and Sgt. Hulka make a daring rescue attempt in explosive style. (Studio Copy)
Reuniting director Ivan Reitman and star Bill Murray two years after their smash hit "Meatballs" from 1979, this release was an even bigger and more polished success. While not Murray's best comedy by any means ("Ghostbusters" from the early years, "Groundhog Day" from the middle and "Lost in Translation" of recent being the standouts), it's certainly one of the favorites of his diehard fans (right alongside "Caddyshack").
Murray plays an all around loser here who ends up enlisting in the army and then turns out to be the constant, wisecracking wiseacre and thorn in the side of the military. Murray and his various reactions (verbal and/or physical) are what make the film work, at least as far as generating laughs. There's nothing sophisticated here (it's like a somewhat toned down military version of "Animal House," a film that not coincidentally was produced by Reitman), but it certainly works as intended.
With some fun supporting performances by the likes of Harold Ramis, John Candy and Warren Oates who plays drill sergeant Hulka, the film is an enjoyable and often rather funny diversion. While it somewhat goes off track in the third act with the armored RV excursion and rescue mission in Europe, overall it's entertaining enough to warrant a recommendation for adult viewers.
