The persons and events in this film are fictitious - fortunately! A masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy, Airplane! features Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and more. Their hilarious high jinks spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love... the list whirls by in rapid succession. Arguably one of the funniest films ever to see the light of a projector (the American Film Institute even agrees by putting it among its "10 funniest movies ever made" list), this 1981 release from the Abrahams, Zucker, Zucker creative team sparked a sequel and a number of copycat imitators, but none are as fresh or hilarious as this offering.
It's certainly not sophisticated comedy by any means, but that's part of the point as jokes are fired as if from a Gatling gun where all might not hit the bull's-eye perfectly, but they certainly strike the target far more often than not. Whether it's verbal or visual humor (or a combination of both), the film excels at its prime directive and that's mining as many laughs from as many sources as possible.
Spoofing all of those "Airport" disaster films from the 1970s (and other films, including "Saturday Night Fever") and lifting some of its plot from the lesser seen and less famous "Zero Hour," the picture features a terrific cast, witty dialogue and a speedy tempo that means it never gets boring, especially when you're trying to catch your breath from the last laugh when the next one comes along. We highly recommend this offering that's just as funny the 10th or 20th time as it was long, long ago in its original theatrical release.

"The Road Warrior," the sequel to the (at the time) cult classic "Mad Max," may have introduced Mel Gibson to international audiences and turned him into a star, but his other film from 1981 - the one you're reading about - showed he could really act.
He and director Peter Weir would reunite two years later for the more complex "The Year of Living Dangerously," but this offering - beautifully photographed - showed the horrors of war - and classism - at its psychological worst. Not a happy film by any means, but a powerful one, it's worth seeing to view Gibson in his formative and some may argue better years when he was an up and coming actor rather than a movie star.

When teenager Wilby Daniels became a part-time canine in THE SHAGGY DOG, he didn't realize that this condition would come back and "hound" him again in his adult years. In this side-splitting sequel, Wilby's all grown up now, with a wife and son. Unfortunately, he's still subject to a furry transformation every time the inscription on an ancient scarab ring is read aloud ... not a comforting prospect when you've bounded into the public eye as a candidate for District Attorney!
In this sequel to the hit film THE SHAGGY DOG, Wilby Daniels, his wife, and their son return from a vacation to find their home stripped bare by burglars. Angry, Wilby decides to run against the rascally incumbent district attorney, 'Honest John' Slade, and he launches a fumbling campaign. When an ice cream man who innocently bought a mysterious scarab ring from the thieves recites its Latin inscription, Wilby once again turns into a shaggy dog.
A mad chase ensues as everyone realizes the worth of the ring and searches for it, even through a huge stack of cherry pies. Slade confiscates the rings and sends Wilby to the pound, where the cunning dog masterminds a breakout. There are still more misadventures, but eventually, 'Honest John' and his slippery sidekick are brought to heel, and Wilby and his family adopt the gallant dogs who helped him become district attorney from the pound.
