QUICK TAKE:
Two guys stumble into an experimental biological dome thinking it's a shopping mall, and end up sealed inside for a year.
PLOT:
Bud Macintosh (PAULY SHORE) and Doyle Johnson (STEPHEN BALDWIN) ae two intellectually challenged slackers who stumble into the bio-dome, an experimental scientific complex. Sealed inside before they are detected, they soon learn that they must spend the next year in the company of a team of scientists trying to live in an ecologically balanced natural world. Realizing that they're in there for a year, the guys decide to have as much fun as possible. What they end up doing is annoying the scientists, in particular their leader Dr. Noah Faulkner (WILLIAM ATHERTON) as they perform all kinds of "zany" stunts. They also long for their girlfriends, Monique and Jan who are on the outside. The guys end up destroying the bio-dome and then spend the rest of the movie putting it back together again.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they like Shore's other films ("Son-in-law," "In the Army Now," etc...) or are fans of "dumb" movies (such as "Dumb and Dumber").
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude language, sex-related material and some drug content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • PAULY SHORE and STEPHEN BALDWIN play idiots who don't care if they destroy a multimillion dollar complex until their ecologically minded girlfriends get mad at them.
  • WILLIAM ATHERTON plays a conceited scientist turned crazy man who plans on blowing up the facility at the end.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

OUR TAKE: 2 out of 10
Other than a hip, retro 1980's soundtrack, there's not much going for this film. There's practically no plot, the acting's bad, and very little of what we're exposed to is funny. While we've been known to laugh at juvenile and dumb humor before, this film will make you feel like you've spent at least a year watching it and waiting for it to end. It barely manages a 2 out of 10.
    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Other than being a very bad and stupid movie, here's what you should know. There's a ton of behavior kids might imitate (that will annoy parents), there's moderate profanity (including one use of the "f" word) and there's some sexual innuendo. Also one of the scientists turns crazy and builds small bombs that he wants to use to destroy the entire complex by the movie's end. As always, read through the category listings before making up your mind.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • The guys watch a TV show where martinis are being made.
  • Monique complains about her mother's boyfriend leaving empty beer cans throughout their house.
  • Bud wants to grow "Purple sticky punch" (ie. Marijuana) inside the dome and later is seen with a large hemp plant (but no drug use is seen).
  • Students are seen drinking beer at a college keg party.
  • The guys find a canister of nitrous oxide and begin taking hits from it and are soon laughing and are "high" as kites.
  • People drink beer at a huge biodome party hosted by Bud and Doyle.
  • BLOOD/ GORE
  • None.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Bud and Doyle don't care and have no remorse about their behavior in the dome nor their destruction of it later in the movie.
  • Bud throws some firecrackers over a wall during the Dome's ribbon cutting ceremony and scares everyone.
  • Two college students fake being environmentalists so that they can go after Monique and Jan.
  • The guys refer to their girlfriends and other women as "chicks."
  • Doyle moons several people when they ask him where a key is (that he swallowed) and he tells one man to reach his hand up there (his butt) and get it out.
  • Noah, having gone crazy, states several times "I am God."
  • FRIGHTENING/TENSE SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Leading into a story on the dome, there's a story of a clown being killed by a sniper (and we see the footage of it from a distance, hear the gunshot and seen the clown fall to the street).
  • Bombs: Noah has turned into a crazy man and is creating small bombs made from pieces of fruit. Several of them are thrown and explode upon impact (damaging property but harming no one).
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Drain my lizard (urinate)," "Geez," "Punk," "Screw the..." "Piss," "Sucks," and "Porking."
  • Bud runs up and whacks Doyle in the head with a book (after losing a game of "Paper, Rocks and Scissors").
  • Bud makes all sorts of annoying and obnoxious noises and sounds that kids will love to imitate.
  • The guys pull their feet up to their mouths and bite their toenails (just like one would bite their fingernails).
  • There is a flashback to Bud's mother holding his head underwater (for up to three minutes) to teach him how to hold his breath.
  • Bud does some pelvic thrusting while dancing.
  • Bud throws trash on the ground (ie. Littering).
  • Doyle performs karate moves in front of a security guard to try to intimidate him.
  • Bud throws some firecrackers over a wall during the Dome's ribbon cutting ceremony and scares everyone.
  • Doyle urinates "outside" in the bio-dome.
  • Doyle kills a fly and then licks it off his hand.
  • In a flashback the guys are seen spraying shaving cream on a dog and repeating "Shave the poochie."
  • Doyle puts his hand into his pants saying "I've got a wicked itch on my nabs."
  • Doyle spits out his food across the table (complaining that it's bland).
  • Doyle performs an elbow drop and lands on top of Bud.
  • There are two farting sequences where the guys try to determine what the other ate by the smell of their farts.
  • In a flashback, the guys are standing on the roof with umbrellas in their hands preparing to "parachute" to the ground. But Bud pushes Doyle off the edge before he's ready and he crashes to the ground.
  • Doyle occasionally runs into doors and knocks himself down.
  • While high from the nitrous oxide they've been inhaling, Doyle says that he doesn't feel anything. So Bud slaps him twice in the face to test that. Later, Doyle finds a syringe and throws it at Bud, impaling him in the chest.
  • Doyle swallows a key (that would allow everyone to leave the dome).
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None.
  • PROFANITY
  • 1 "f" word, 1 "s" word, 8 damns, 5 craps, 4 "ass" words, 4 slang term for male genitals (the "d" word), 1 SOB, and 3 uses of "Oh my God," 2 uses of "Oh God," and 1 use each of "God," and "God damn" as exclamations.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • When the guys hear the name "Bio-Dome," they ask "Do you think that means it goes both ways" and then flicker their tongues at each other in a mock bi-sexual manner.
  • When asked what the guys want out of life, they respond "To die and come back as a leotard."
  • The guys crawl into bed with the two women scientists (since they don't have a bed for themselves), but are quickly thrown out.
  • Bud walks up to the one of the female scientists and touches her on the butt. Later she acts like she's performing oral sex on a carrot to drive Bud crazy.
  • Bud acts like he's feeling Monique's breasts through a glass window and then acts like he's kissing them.
  • Monique's mother's boyfriend tells her, "It looks like your guys are getting some tail (ie. the women scientists). If I were you and I'd go out and hump for the next year."
  • Bud makes a remark about a bio-dome condom and then the guys mention that they could have anatomically correct action figures made of them. They then extend their arms to show the size (obviously an exaggeration) of their penises.
  • The guys joke with the press about there being a massive orgy in the dome and then tell a scientist to stop hogging the "KY" (jelly).
  • Bud refers to a scientist's efforts to get two butterflies to mate as "Are you trying to get those two to start porking?"
  • Bud tells a scientist that "Doyle's got a boner and wants to put it in your ear" (but instead puts a finger there).
  • Monique's mother's boyfriend delivers pizza to the guys at the dome and they ask him how he got the job. He replies "F*cking President Clinton." Doyle misunderstands his meaning and responds, "You had sex with the president?"

  • Doyle moons several people when they ask him where a key is.
  • The female scientists, planning on giving Bud and Doyle a "going away" present, come into their room and lay on top of the guys, kissing them. Bud grabs one woman's butt but then stops, remembering that they've already got girlfriends. The women leave and Bud and Doyle go up to the closed door and start humping it.
