QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A spoof of the urban gangster movies.
PLOT:
Ashtray (SHAWN WAYANS) is a teen who goes to live with his father in the ‘hood. He hangs out with Loc Dog (MARLON WAYANS), a drinking in public, gun-toting cousin, Preach (CHRIS SPENCER) a reformed gang member who spouts the way of the gospel, and Crazy Legs (SULI MCCULLOUGH), a teen who dreamed of a life of dancing before a drive by shooting left him in a wheelchair. When Ashtray begins seeing Dashiki (TRACEY JONES), who's obviously seen everyone else in the neighborhood based on the number of kids she has, things heat up as local gang leader Toothpick (DARRELL HEATH) isn't happy that this young kid is dating his girlfriend.
WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of the Wayan brothers (TV's "In Living Color"), gangster movies, or "Airplane" type spoof movies, they will.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong language, sexuality, some drug content and violence.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • As this is a spoof of urban gang movies, none of the main characters, including those played by SHAWN WAYANS and MARLON WAYANS, are good role models.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

OUR TAKE: 3 out of 10
This movie hits the target as the urban gangster genre was ripe for the picking of being spoofed. Picking on every silly or overly dramatic scene that occurs in such movies, this film's humor depends on one's taste for jokes being made about people being shot, or in wheelchairs, etc... Most of that falls into the same category as the other spoof movies such as the "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" series and the more recent "High School High." Just like most of those movies, the jokes come fast and furious at the beginning and then all but disappear as the paper thin plot takes over and replaces the shenanigans. That's too bad for this genre as the movies would be far more entertaining if they paced themselves with the jokes. As it is, one gets restless toward the end. Still, if this type of humor tickles your funny bone, you'll probably enjoy this film. If, however, you're easily offended by off the wall or somewhat tasteless jokes, you'd probably be better off staying away from this one. We give it a 3 out of 10.
    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
As in all spoof type movies, none of the material is mean to be taken at face value. Many people and a great deal of kids, however, will take what they see at that value. Thus, if parents allow their kids to see this one, they should make sure they understand the comic under linings of what's occurring. As it stands at face value, here's what's included. Profanity is extreme with other forty "f" words and nearly twenty of them using the prefix "mother." Obviously gangster lifestyles are seen and there's a great deal of "comic book" style violence with people being shot (none of it's graphic and it's all supposed to be played for laughs). Sexuality is extreme with all of the language, talk and some nudity. Drinking is heavy and there are a few scenes with a grandmother smoking marijuana. If your kids understand that this is meant as a spoof and if they're mature enough to handle the material, it's up to you whether they should see this movie. But if none of those conditions are true, keep your kids away from this one as the material (spoof or not) is way too extreme for them.

Also, there are references to "Bacardi" (rum), "gang bangs," "making love," smoking a "blunt" (marijuana), mass murders and blowing up a shop. And that's just from the lyrics we could make out -- there could be even more material present.
