QUICK TAKE:
Action/Adventure: Two narcotics detectives must deal with their partnership issues while trying to put an end to a local drug lord's ecstasy business.
PLOT:
Although they've been partners for many years, Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey (WILL SMITH) and Marcus Burnett (MARTIN LAWRENCE) still don't always get along and keep secrets from each other. For Mike, it's that he's been seeing Marcus' sister, Syd (GABRIELLE UNION), a reported paper pusher for the DEA. Marcus, on the other hand, has put in for a transfer, as he wants to spend more time with his family and less with Mike.

They must put all of that aside, however, when their boss, Captain Howard (JOE PANTOLIANO), assigns them to stop the flow of ecstasy into the city. In doing so, they come across flamboyant local drug lord Johnny Tapia (JORDI MOLLÀ) who's intent on taking control of the entire trade while working with local dealers and club owners such as Alexei (PETER STORMARE).

As the two detectives try to bring them down, they must also contend with the discovery that Syd is really an undercover DEA agent who's in deep with Tapia. From that point on, and while dealing with their own differences, they must rescue Syd and stay out of harm's way as they attempt to put an end to Tapia's reign of terror.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they liked the first film, are fans of anyone in the cast or Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay movies, they probably will (with male teenagers being the most likely of wanting to see it).
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong violence and action, pervasive language, sexuality and drug content.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • WILL SMITH plays a Miami cop who uses strong profanity and a great deal of violence and killings to get the job done. He also sees Marcus' sister on the sly.
  • MARTIN LAWRENCE plays his partner who also uses strong profanity, wants a transfer away from Mike and is upset that he's seeing Syd. He's high in one scene after accidentally ingesting ecstasy.
  • JORDI MOLLÀ plays a drug importer and distributor who uses strong profanity, and kills or has people killed.
  • GABRIELLE UNION plays Marcus' sister who's working undercover, uses strong profanity and is seeing Mike.
  • JOE PANTOLIANO plays their captain who's always yelling at them for their actions. He uses strong profanity.
  • PETER STORMARE plays a local club owner and drug dealer who uses strong profanity, is drunk in one scene and is responsible for murders.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated action film. Profanity consists of at least 138 "f" words, while many other expletives and colorful phrases are used. Sexually explicit dialogue and comedic innuendo are present, a videotape shows a couple having sex in a car (with movement and sounds), while rats are shown mating in the missionary position.

A freshly dead woman's bare breasts are seen (meaning she looks asleep rather than dead), while various women are seen in revealing and/or wet attire (including a thong bottom), with the camera focusing on their bodies.

Violence consists of scores of people being killed by tremendous amounts of gunfire, explosions and the like, occasionally with bloody and/or gory results. Fighting and a great deal of property damage also occur. Those scenes and others, including the sight of severed and bloody body parts and the graphic examination of corpses in a morgue might be disturbing or suspenseful to some viewers.

Various characters have extreme cases of bad attitudes, some drink and/or smoke (with one being drunk), drug references are made, and several characters purposefully and accidentally take ecstasy (and are high as a result). Various other bits of imitative behavior are also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashing lights on the screen, several instances of that occur in the film (one in strobe fashion).

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • We see the processing of ecstasy pills in a lab.
  • Miscellaneous people drink.
  • People take ecstasy at a club, including a man who overdoses.
  • Marcus has a beer.
  • We see a prominently placed Miller Genuine Draft truck.
  • Johnny and Alexei each have wine in front of them.
  • Johnny wants Syd to join her in the ocean, but she tries to distract him and says they should stay where they are and get drunk.
  • There's talk of a person being a wine connoisseur.
  • Marcus asks if his daughter's 15-year-old date is on crack (being a tough father and reading the guy the riot act). He then asks the kid if he has any joints and if he intends on getting the daughter high (he says no).
  • Mike acts like the crazy uncle and drinks from a bottle when Marcus' daughter's 15-year-old date shows up.
  • A comment is made about what someone is smoking in their crack pipe.
  • Marcus inadvertently ingests some ecstasy (that dissolved in a vial of water). He then acts high for a bit, much to Mike's dismay.
  • Alexei drives while drunk, crashes his car into a wall and throws his bottle.
  • We see cocaine labs that then explode.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Several men are shot (with blood splatter) and a bullet grazes two others, slightly bloodying them.
  • Mike tells Marcus that his shot (that nicked Marcus in the butt) "hit the meat" but was "nowhere near the hole."
  • We see a little bit of blood on Syd's clothes following an attack.
  • A bad guy is shot in the back of the head (with bloody results on the head and wall). We then see several dead and bloody bodies.
  • We see that Johnny had his men kill and cut up another man when they bring out that man's body parts sticking out of a barrel. We see the severed and bloody ends of limbs sticking from it as well as blood that runs and spills from the barrel, resulting in a pool of blood. Later, Mike finds a severed finger in a kitchen (where the butchering apparently took place) and there's blood everywhere. We later see that severed finger again.
  • Upset at one of his own men, Johnny shoots the man execution style in the head (with blood shooting out, pooling on a driveway and covering a bystander).
  • As Mike and Marcus chase a morgue van, bodies in body bags start to fall from the van. One lands on the road and the cops' car runs over it. One then lands on the hood of their car and they try to get it off. A body is then decapitated as it falls and their car runs over it (seen from a distance and only briefly).
  • We see autopsy scars on various cadavers.
  • A person has a little bit of blood on their head.
  • Mike and Marcus go into the morgue where they're to search for drugs inside cadavers. Marcus reacts to the smell as Mike visibly places his hand down inside a body's chest cavity. As a result, Marcus vomits and then does so again after he touches another body's face and the top of its head falls off (displaying its brains). During that, Mike also pulls out a kidney from one of the bodies.
  • There's a little blood splatter when a person is shot in the leg.
  • As a guy holds a gun to Mike's head, Marcus shoots him (we see the bullet in slow motion as it hits the guy in the forehead -- with bloody results) and the body falls into the sand. There, it sets off a land mine, blowing the body into the air and tearing it in half (we see part of the bloody remains fall to the ground).
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Johnny and his minions have bad attitudes regarding their criminal and lethal actions.
  • We see a KKK meeting (with a cross burning) where its members claim "white power."
  • A guy who overdosed at a club is dumped on the street from a moving vehicle (by orders from Alexei).
  • Alexei is a drug dealer of some sort. He also makes a comment to Syd (who's black) that he also likes hip-hop music (something of a racist comment).
  • When Johnny's young daughter says someone said she looked like a model, one of Johnny's minions snorts in disbelief.
  • One of the cops jokes with a Cuban cop, "It's low tide, don't you have some relatives to pick up?"
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence" and/or "Blood/Gore" might also be unsettling or suspenseful to some viewers.
  • A large car carrier truck smashes into other vehicles during a chase sequence as additional machine gun fire occurs. The driver of the car carrier then lets lose the various cars it's carrying, sending them careening down the road toward Mike and Marcus who must dodge them (the vehicles flip and explode) and other traffic (including one vehicle that just passes over them). During this, an empty boat crashes into a car, there's an explosion and more property damage.
  • For those who don't like violence against animals, the following occurs in the film: A guy shoots at rats in a basement, we hear the sound of one apparently being squashed and the man shoots another rat. A man heaves an iguana over a wall (to be used as a distraction), while a lizard detonates a land mine.
  • For those afraid of rats, there are a few scenes featuring them in a basement (with Marcus being scared of them -- played for comedy - as he poses as an exterminator).
  • For those who don't like dead bodies and/or morgues, there are several scenes involving one or both (with some gory footage).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Handguns/Machine guns/Shotgun/Rockets/Landmines: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR

  • We see a sign that reads, "Keep the f*ck out."
  • All of the fighting and stunt work (including Mike rolling on the ground and shooting his guns) might be enticing for some kids to imitate.
  • Miscellaneous people have tattoos.
  • Trying to get their informant to talk, Mike and Marcus smash some of the guy's cabinets.
  • One of the cops jokes with a Cuban cop, "It's low tide, don't you have some relatives to pick up?"
  • A van races by and barely passes in front of a moving train.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • A sudden gunshot might startle some viewers.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • An extreme amount of suspenseful and action-oriented music plays throughout the film.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • None that we heard.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 138 "f" words (29 used with "mother," 1 written, and 3 used sexually as are the terms "bang," "hump," "pile driving" and "screw"), 123 "s" words, 2 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck" and "p*cker"), 1 using female genitals ("p*ssy"), 8 for breasts (variations of "t*t"), 35 asses (1 used with "hole"), 14 damns, 13 hells, 1 crap, 1 S.O.B., 8 uses of "G-damn," 2 each of "Jesus," "Oh God" and "Oh my God" and 1 use each of "God" and "Jesus Christ" as exclamations.
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • In an imagined scene, we briefly see a woman straddling Mike's lap (both are clothed) and a comment is made about "bang your therapist."
  • The camera focuses in tight on the bodies of shapely and scantily clad women (in small underwear) as water pours down onto them. Varying amounts of cleavage are also seen and there are many shots of such women dancing.
  • Syd shows cleavage.
  • There's brief talk of "hooking up" (possibly sexual).
  • There's talk that Marcus' gunshot wound to the butt caused nerve damage and affected other things (meaning he's impotent).
  • Marcus' wife shows cleavage in her bikini top.
  • Syd jumps up and wraps her legs around and kisses Mike who's standing (both are clothed).
  • Marcus jokingly states that Mike's problems stem from his mother refusing him her "t*tties" when he was a child.
  • Marcus and Mike take a tape they've received into an electronics store and have a worker play it. It quickly turns into a recorded sex scene from outside a car showing a man having sex with a woman from behind her (with movement and her loud sounds) and this plays on all of the TVs in the store.
  • Later, Marcus and Mike discuss the latter accidentally shooting the former in the butt (from earlier in the film). The dialogue that follows is also played on all of the TVs in the store and is taken out of context by the viewers (who believe it's gay related). Some of the dialogue includes Marcus saying that his "ass" still hurts from what Mike did to it and how Mike "popped me from behind." Marcus then says that he can't get an erection (prompting a child in the store to ask, "What's an erection?") and that he's still flaccid. They still don't know they're on TV when they talk about being partners, but with boundaries.
  • Marcus states that rats will "keep f*cking," that the males are just looking for "rat p*ssy" and will be "humping" several times a day. There's more talk about "humping" and "pile driving" and Marcus states, "They f*ck just like us" as we see a shot of rats mating in the missionary position.
  • Johnny menacingly asks Alexei, "Should I screw your young wife?"
  • We see a woman in a thong bottom at the beach (from behind and the camera focuses on her mostly bare rear) as well as various other women in bikinis (including Syd).
  • Mike tells Marcus that nothing happened (sexually) between him and Syd.
  • Marcus, acting like the tough father to his daughter's 15-year-old date (and played for comedy), asks if the kid is still a virgin and then says that there will be "no f*cking tonight." A question is then asked of the kid regarding whether he's ever made love to a man or wanted to do that.
  • We see the bare breasts of a young and apparently freshly dead woman (meaning she looks like she's asleep) in a morgue. Marcus then ends up hiding alongside that body when others approach and his face is close to her breasts.
  • While accidentally high, Marcus runs his hand along a car and says that it's like a woman's butt.
  • After being showered down (clothed) by Mike and their captain (to deal with him accidentally ingesting ecstasy), Marcus suddenly proclaims that he has an erection, that they should send him home and tell his wife that he's on his way.
  • Syd shows some cleavage and does some brief passionate kissing with Johnny (while clothed).
  • We briefly see some hookers in short skirts.
  • SMOKING
  • Johnny smokes several times, Alexei smokes a cigar once, and several miscellaneous characters smoke (cigarettes and cigars).
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • None.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • The drug trade.
  • We see a KKK meeting (with a cross burning) where its members claim "white power."
  • Keeping secrets from others.
  • That most police officers rarely draw their guns, let alone shoot them, as occurs so much in this film.
  • VIOLENCE
  • A woman plays with a gun and accidentally shoots it, damaging a statue.
  • Marcus and Mike infiltrate a KKK meeting and then emerge from their sheets with their guns drawn. A guy is tripped and a person holds a gun on another person. Several men are then shot (with blood splatter) and a gun battle breaks out between the cops and the clansmen. Something explodes and blows several men through the air. Mike then fires a shot and we see the bullet travel in slow motion toward Marcus (it nicks his clothed butt cheek with brief blood) and then a clansman (it hits his neck with a little more blood, but doesn't kill him).
  • A guy who overdosed at a club is dumped on the street from a moving vehicle (by orders from Alexei).
  • Marcus is swept away by a wall of water when his backyard, above-ground pool collapses.
  • A person shoots another person execution style and there's then struggling inside a truck with some vehicles crashing into each other. Machine guns are fired at the truck, driven by Syd, as she tries to flee with the truck's door (and a guy hanging onto it) slamming into a structure and being torn off. Vehicles chase the truck and their occupants fire more machine gun fire at the truck, riddling it with holes.
  • A cop shoots at a villain's tire, prompting a bad car crash that's followed by multiple crashes. Mike and Marcus open fire on more villains, killing some of them as a massive gun battle breaks out (where vehicles are riddled with bullets and some people are hit, but without blood). Syd uses a shotgun to shoot and presumably kill a bad guy.
  • A large car carrier truck smashes into other vehicles during a chase sequence as additional machine gun fire occurs. Marcus fires a machine gun at that truck, but then accidentally shoots up the dashboard of Mike's car. In the end, we hear that 22 cars and 1 boat were totaled during that sequence.
  • A guy shoots at rats in a basement, we hear the sound of one apparently being squashed and the man shoots another rat.
  • Trying to get their informant to talk, Mike and Marcus smash some of the guy's cabinets.
  • A massive gun battle (involving handguns, shotguns and machine guns) breaks out between Mike & Marcus and various bad guys in a house with both parties on either side of a wall. During this, the cops shoot several bad guys, including one through a hole into the eye (we don't see the impact but can see what's coming) and another in the back of the head (with bloody results on the head and wall). Marcus then kicks the lone survivor, then spins around, and kicks him again. They then hold their guns on this guy to make him talk as we see several dead and bloody bodies.
  • A gun is held to a person's head.
  • Someone shoots at several other people.
  • Upset at one of his own men, Johnny shoots the man execution style in the head (with blood shooting out, pooling on a driveway and covering a bystander).
  • Marcus pushes Mike (upon learning that he's seeing his sister).
  • A van drives through a fence and then through a wall.
  • Guys push desks through office windows (to break them) and then open fire on Mike and Marcus with machine gun fire, prompting their car to crash into the ground floor space of the office building. A massive gun battle then breaks out between the cops and the villains.
  • Some people are knocked aside and down during a foot chase.
  • Mike struggles with a guy on a monorail car and several shots are fired. The man then bites Mike on the arm. Mike then repeatedly bashes the guy against the hand-pole. More punches are delivered and the bad guy then drives Mike out through the front glass where the two struggle before the bad guy falls beneath the rail and is electrocuted and run over (not seen). During that, Marcus shoots out the back window of the car to get inside.
  • Mike acts like the crazy uncle when Marcus' daughter's 15-year-old date shows up. He holds his gun on the kid and pushes him up against the wall to frisk him.
  • A window is broken as a distraction, and a van then blasts through the front of the morgue (resulting in some property damage) for the same purpose.
  • Johnny holds a gun on Syd.
  • Alexei shoots a man dead (no blood).
  • Several men riddle another man with gunfire, killing him.
  • A machine gun is fired into a boat to disable it.
  • A man heaves an iguana over a wall (to be used as a distraction).
  • A big explosion sends many bodies flying through the air, while a rocket causes another explosion and various people are killed by machine gun fire during a raid on a villain's compound. A massive gun battle then ensues. After a villain's elderly mother shoots at them with a shotgun, an agent punches her. Many more people are then killed during the continuing gun battle.
  • Marcus throws what's presumably a grenade during a rescue raid.
  • A large amount of scaffolding collapses.
  • Several people are killed by a missile explosion.
  • There's a little blood splatter when a person is shot in the leg.
  • A massive explosion destroys much of a huge mansion.
  • We see cocaine labs that then explode. Mike and Marcus then drive a Hummer through many of those labs (housed in metal sheds) that then explode as they careen down a hill of such sheds and cause a great deal of property damage.
  • Guards riddle two vehicles with machine gun fire (but their occupants are okay).
  • A person holds a gun to another person's head.
  • A lizard detonates a land mine.
  • A person throws a gun to detonate a land mine that then pops up, explodes and kills a person.
  • As a guy holds a gun to Mike's head, Marcus shoots him (we see the bullet in slow motion as it hits the guy in the forehead -- with bloody results) and the body falls into the sand. There, it sets off another land mine, blowing the body into the air and tearing it in half (we see part of the bloody remains fall to the ground).
  • Mike and Marcus are swept away by a huge wave of water when an above-ground pool collapses (both are okay).
