QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: When his coworkers discover that he's never had sex, a 40-year-old virgin sets out to lose his virginity with their help, all as he falls for a divorcée.
PLOT:
Andy Stitzer (STEVE CARELL) is a 40-year-old stock supervisor at an electronics store who just so happens to be a virgin. Somewhat of a nerdy guy, he lives by himself, has a place filled with collectible models and action figures, and rides his bicycle everywhere. When his coworkers -- including David (PAUL RUDD) who's fixated on his ex-girlfriend, Jay (ROMANY MALCO) who cheats on his significant other, and the wild and crazy Cal (SETH ROGEN) -- learn that he's never gone all of the way with a woman, they set out to remedy that situation.

Declining the casual sex solution offered by his older boss Paula (JANE LYNCH), Andy tries to follow his coworkers' advice that gets him hooked up with the likes of drunken floozy Nicky (LESLIE MANN) and the cute and eager Beth (ELIZABETH BANKS) who works at the local bookstore. Andy, however, is smitten with Trish (CATHERINE KEENER), a divorced mother of three and young grandmother of one who runs her own online auction store. They end up dating, but agree not to have sex until their 20th date. With his coworkers still trying their best to help him lose his virginity, Andy must decide how to proceed and with whom.

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 68 "f" words, while many other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Other violence includes background scenes of another violent movie (brutal hitting), while some slapstick material is also present. Various characters have varying degrees of bad attitudes (including men objectifying women), while a mother and her teenage daughter briefly argue over the latter going on birth control.

  • We see a montage of the guys corrupting Andy, including him drinking a lot (shots, beer, tropical drinks) and then smoking what looks like pot through what looks like an apple.
  • Cal says that waxing (the hair from one's body) doesn't hurt "unless you're a bitch."

  • A young woman wears a midriff-revealing top.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • Some songs had lyrics we couldn't hear or understand, although we heard some about "suck on the..." and "get your freak on," while another song might have sexual lyrics.
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 68 "f" words (2 used with "mother," 16 used sexually as are phrases such as "laid," "nail," "screw," "do it," "get it on" and "tap"), 29 "s" words, 19 slang terms using female genitals ("p*ssy," variations of that word and "poon," and "tw*t"), 15 using male ones ("d*ck," "c*ck," "c*cks*cker" and "pogo stick"), 4 slang terms for breasts (variation of "t*tty"), 17 asses (2 used with "hole"), 4 hells, 3 damns, 1 S.O.B., 15 uses of "Oh my God," 8 of "God," 4 of "Oh God," 3 of "My God," 2 each of "G-damn" and "Swear to God" and 1 use each of "For God's sakes" and "Oh Jesus Christ."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Considering how fast much of it occurs onscreen, the following should be considered a bare minimum of such content.
  • As he walks across the room in the morning, we see an obvious erection in Andy's boxers. We then see him standing at the toilet to urinate, but he must bend over quite a bit to achieve that -- considering his current status (we hear but don't see the actual urination).
  • Joe's older, upstairs neighbor says about him to his wife, "That guy needs to get laid."
  • A miscellaneous buxom woman shows cleavage in her outfit.
  • Cal tells Andy that he and his wife went to Tijuana where they caught a show that turned out to showcase a "woman f*cking a horse." He uses that term several more times, says the horse was really giving it to her, and that it was not cool to watch.
  • The guys talk about their various sexual exploits while playing poker. That includes talking about "t*ts," Cal saying he was having sex when the dog showed up, David mentioning having sex with his ex-girlfriend in the past, and one mentions having only seen a woman when she's on her back. The others then want to hear Andy's story. The joke (on the part of the film) is that he never has, so he starts making up things, talking of a girl being a "nasty freak," that he'd be "nailing her," her saying "Let's screw," "I want to f*ck" and "Me so horny, me love you long time." The guys (not realizing he's lying) ask about the woman's breasts and nipples, commenting about various types, with Andy saying they feel like bags of sand. One then asks if Andy's gay, and a comment is made by one guy that he touched a guy's balls once at Hebrew school. The guys then realize Andy's a virgin, with one saying he wants to get Andy "laid" and "getting you some p*ssy." More such sexual talk occurs.
  • The next day, the guys still talk about that with Andy, with Jay doing some clothed pelvic thrusting in front of a large TV display showing what looks like a music video with a woman in a thong bottom dancing and shaking about. More graphic sexual talk continues covering a number of topics, such as a "dirty Sanchez."
  • Andy tells the guys that when he was younger, he tried to lose his virginity, but it didn't happen and then he stopped trying.
  • David states that his ex-girlfriend "went down on" a guy on an escalator and a comment is made about "blow everybody."
  • As Andy tries not to think about sex, he bikes by a bus showing a large cologne ad where a man's head is buried down on a woman's chest and the logo says, "You know you want it." He then sees other such things, including two dogs having sex (we see the thrusting).
  • We see a flashback to Andy's former sexual encounter where a comment is made about never having oral sex. That includes the sight of him with a young woman in her bra (that shows cleavage) and small shorts who's frolicking with him and then starts to suck on his toe, commenting on it being big and thick. He then accidentally kicks her in the face due to a reflex, bloodying her nose.
  • We see the guys drinking with various young women who are apparently attending a bachelorette party and seem to be drunk. Jay and Cal both hold rubber penises, while Andy jokes about "Betty C*cker" and asks, "Who wants penis cake" while holding a cake tin in the shape of a large penis and scrotum (some of the women say "I do").
  • A drunken woman passionately kisses Andy while standing, grabs his clothed butt and has her hand on his belt. She then drinks more shots and then gets behind the wheel, getting him to breath into her court-appointed breathalyzer (since he's sober). When he reacts adversely to her drunk driving, she says, "You're not getting in my pants acting like that." After she crashes and vomits on him, she says she'll still have sex with him if he wants, but he declines the offer.
  • The term "jerk off" is used (meaning masturbation).
  • A drunken woman blurts out to Andy that she hopes she gets her period soon.
  • Some sexual talk occurs among the guys.
  • Trish shows some cleavage.
  • The guys state that Andy should find some "hood rats" (loose women) to have sex with before Trish since he'll be terrible the first time around.
  • The guys lock Andy in between the doors of the closed electronics store so that he must watch the porno tape that's playing inside. In it, we see a woman moving up and down, as well as a guy repeatedly licking a woman's bare breast.
  • We see a shirtless Andy having his hairy chest waxed, with Cal saying if the woman starts doing his "pubes," he's going to leave.
  • Cal and Andy spot Beth who Cal refers to as a "hot ass girl." She's bent over and we see the top of her thong riding up. That causes Andy to say something's wrong with her underwear, followed by Cal joking that he's right since "they're not in my mouth."
  • Cal talks about growing pot in the past as a metaphor for asking women out. He then tells Andy to "plant that seed...plant it with your finger." Later, Cal says that you wait for it to grow into a plant, "then you f*ck the plant."
  • Andy approaches Beth and acts aloof, with them finally talking about the "do it yourself" section of the bookstore. Andy then suggestively asks if she likes to "do it yourself." She says "sometimes, if the mood strikes."
  • David brings over his big box of porn for Andy in hopes that it will inspire him. Titles include "Harry Tw*tter," "School of C*ck" and "Boner Jams 03" (a compilation tape David made). Andy sheepishly says he doesn't do that (masturbate) that much. David then jokes that he's done it twice since he arrived. David leaves and Andy acts like he's not going to watch any of them, but then sheepishly does. He then lights candles, puts on his pajamas and readies the tissues and lotion, while turning his action figures and photos around (so that they don't see him). He starts watching a tape called "Space Nuts" and we hear sexual sounds and see bare breasts and movement, but he then fast forwards through the tape so that everything zips by and the sexual movement is exaggerated in terms of speed. The scene then cuts to him watching a tape of "Everybody Loves Raymond" (the regular TV show).
  • During a meet and greet montage (where men and women in one room meet each other), a lesbian says she's looking forward to getting back up on the "pogo stick" (dating men again). More such sexual talk occurs.
  • David's ex-girlfriend angrily tells him not to reminisce about "when we f*cked." He then calls her a whore.
  • A woman (wearing a very low-cut top that sports lots of cleavage) chats with Andy. Her bare breast then pops out from that (she doesn't realize this) and he acts uncomfortable seeing it as she continues talking.
  • Cal says that a fun game is to take three Excedrin PMs and see if you can "whack off" before you fall to sleep.
  • Jay's girlfriend/wife confronts Andy with phrases about women that she thinks Andy wrote (when it was really Jay). They include "hurtin' for a squirtin,'" and "Ho fo sho" (whore for sure).
  • David is drunk in the store and holding a video camera on himself (that we then see on the many TVs in the electronics store). He's talking to his ex-girlfriend in the abstract, asking if she's been doing a lot of this (referring to oral sex as he aims the camera at his mouth and moves it back and forth). We then see views of his bare butt live and on the TVs when he aims the camera there, and he then tries to put it down the front of his pants, but Cal stops him.
  • Cal invites Andy to a party that's really just a one on one rendezvous with a hooker, but it turns out to be a male transvestite (which Andy recognizes and nothing happens). Cal is later surprised by that and someone jokes that he "got a hummer from the trannie" (an erection from the transvestite).
  • When David states that he's now celibate, Cal jokes that it means he's gay.
  • One of the guys jokes that he loves it when balls are in his face.
  • Trish and Andy passionately kiss (clothed) while lying on a bed. Her bare leg is up along his side, and she tells him to take off his pants. He starts to do that under the covers and she asks if he has any protection (with him stating he doesn't believe in guns). She's then in her bra (showing cleavage) and panties, and tells him to retrieve some condoms from a nearby drawer. She says they're from her previous marriage since they didn't have sex much. She then goes off into the bathroom and he tries to figure out how to use the condoms (opening the package and what to do with them -- we see him with one over his entire arm, blowing up another and then trying to put one on under the covers when we hear a loud pop and see him react in pain -- all played for comedy). Her 16-year-old daughter (and her boyfriend) then walk in on them, with the daughter saying it's not fair since she's not allowed to have sex, angrily asking how many times they "did it" (seeing all of the "used" condoms on the bed, prompting the girl's boyfriend to say he wants some pointers from Andy).
  • The next morning, we see Andy with another erection in his boxers. He then sits on the toilet and we see his urine suddenly hit his face (from his unseen erection).
  • Andy's female boss tells him that she has a solution to his virginity problem, stating that she can be his "f*ck-buddy," defining that as a special friend "who you f*ck." She then goes on tell Andy about her first sexual experience when she was young but had her current developed body.
  • Cal tells Andy that the advantage of being a virgin is that he can tell Trish that he doesn't have Chlamydia. Someone then comments on Andy needing to "bust off that first nut" and that he has semen backed up.
  • Seeing Andy with Trish, Andy's older neighbor says "My man's gonna get it on tonight," with that man's wife saying "You better get on me."
  • Andy and Trish agree not to have sex until their 20th date. The two then passionately kiss on the sofa, with Marla (her daughter) knocking and asking if it's safe to come in "or are you doing it?" (while walking in with her 6-year-old sister).
  • Cal talks to Andy on the phone and asks him about Trish "Are you having sex right now?" When Cal finds out that Trish is a (young) grandmother, he jokes that Andy should "f*ck" her on her plastic covered couch and makes other such explicit joking comments.
  • Referring to her above suggestion, Andy's boss tells him that she'll haunt his dreams (sexually) and that "the door is always open, so to speak" (as she takes a whiff of him at work).
  • We see miscellaneous cleavage.
  • Jay tells Andy that he came home to his girlfriend/wife with a condom accidentally still on (and the woman was upset).
  • Trish and Marla (her 16-year-old daughter) are in a loud argument over the latter (who shows cleavage) wanting to go on birth control, with Trish saying she wants the daughter to keep it in her pants until she goes to college.
  • Andy then offers to take Marla to the parent/child birth control seminar where he spots medical cross-section models of the male and female reproductive body areas, with him looking at the female one and asking "Where do you put the penis?" One father at the seminar says his teenage son is into some exotic stuff and then wonders how he can get his wife to do that. Andy then asks if the saying is true about if you don't use it, you lose it. The female instructor then discusses the option of "outer-course" which includes anything that isn't vaginal intercourse (which has the above boy saying he likes the latter and his father agreeing that the boy does). The instructor then lists things that fall under that category including dry humping, masturbation, dual masturbation, oral sex play and more. A comment is made about "putting the p*ssy on the pedestal," and the teenager says he needs extra large condoms, with his father telling him "You have a tiny penis."
  • At the above parent/child birth control seminar, a guy laughs at Marla for still being a virgin. The teenage boy from above then says he'd "tap that" (have sex with Marla).
  • David says that he retired his "c*ck."
  • Marla tells Andy that she knows he's a virgin.
  • Jay looks at the sonogram of his unborn boy and proudly comments on the size of his "d*ck." A guy jokes that all of them look big on TV, joking that an example is his sister's "d*ck."
  • Trish shows cleavage.
  • Trish excitedly informs Andy that it's their 20th date (meaning they can have sex), with him being nervous and saying it's only their 18th. She kisses and gets on top of him, but he stops her, they end in an argument and nothing else sexual happens. When she rags on him for his nerdy behavior, he says that Einstein rode a bicycle, prompting her to reply, "He had a wife who he f*cked."
  • Jay's girlfriend/wife shows a lot of cleavage.
  • Andy announces that he needs some "poon" and genital to genital contact.
  • Andy comes to the drunken realization that you can't have a relationship until you have sex.
  • David and a young woman passionately kiss in a bar.
  • Andy approaches Amy (from an above scene) to have sex, with a suggestive comment about taking the "party back to my place." Andy, who's drunk, says he hopes she has a big trunk because he's putting his bike in it (a literal comment about her car and his bike). She takes it to be sexual innuendo and playfully turns and shows her clothed butt to him. Back at her place, she's in her bra and acting aroused, telling him he's kinky. She then says they should shave each other (seeing his partially waxed chest). More such sexual talk occurs, including her saying they should get in the bath as they're going to get dirty. She then starts to undress Andy, removing his belt and playfully whacking him with it. She then removes his pants down to his boxers and says she just wants to please him. She then says that she'll show him what she likes. Her robe comes off (we see her bare back) and she gets into a bubble bath in front of Andy. She then takes the extendable faucet nozzle and places it down under the bubbles to her crotch (which leads to her orgasm), all as Andy uncomfortably stands there. He then realizes he's making a mistake and starts to leave when he meets his friends in the other room. A comment is made that the girl is a freak and that she scares Andy. All then leave except for Cal who walks into the bathroom and removes his shirt (we hear but don't see the girl sound happy to see him).
  • Andy returns home to find that Trish has found David's porno tape collection, and thinks it's Andy's. She then finds the above medical cross-section model of the female anatomy and wonders in disgust what he does with it.
  • Andy and Trish end up getting married, with the preacher telling them at the altar as they kiss, "For God's sake, consummate the thing." We then see them in bed on their wedding night, with her asking if he's ready and he is. He's then on top of her under the covers and she announces that he's officially not a virgin anymore. We then see the onscreen title that reads "One minute later" and we see them lying side by side, with her asking if he wants to do it again and he does. We then see the onscreen title of "Two hours later" and they both look exhausted in bed.
  • During a musical number at the end, we see David and Cal shirtless in martial arts type pants, with Cal's riding rather low, but nothing explicit is seen.
  • SMOKING
  • David smokes at least once.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Trish and Marla (her 16-year-old daughter) are in a loud argument over the latter (who shows cleavage) wanting to go on birth control, with Trish saying she wants the daughter to keep it in her pants until she goes to college.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Being a virgin, how people react to that, and losing one's virginity.
  • How some men objectify women.
  • Cal and David participate in a joking bit of "You know how I know you're gay?" jabs at each other (where they fill in a reason at the end of saying that).
  • Andy comes to the drunken realization that you can't have a relationship until you have sex.
  • VIOLENCE
  • The film does contain violent scenes from other films (see below) that would normally rate higher, but since they're in the background of shots in this comedy, the rating stands as "moderate."
  • We see a flashback to Andy's former sexual encounter where a woman starts to suck on his toe. He then accidentally kicks her in the face due to a reflex, bloodying her nose.
  • A drunken woman swerves through traffic, sideswipes some cars and then smashes hard into one (played for comedy).
  • We see clips of a zombie film on a TV in the background of the electronics store where a kid zombie suddenly bites a person on the neck (we see a little blood) and then see some blood on a person's shirt.
  • Andy hits himself on the head with his phone for flubbing his call to Trish.
  • In the background of a shot on a TV, we see footage from "The Bourne Identity" where various characters hit each other with brutal blows.
  • We see violence in a video game where characters hit each other and one finally tears the other in half, with animated bloody/gory results.
  • We see Andy riding his bike down the street and then hitting a big pothole, sending him flying forward and crashing to the street (played for laughs).
  • Trying to get David to go talk to a girl, Cal flicks him several times, including to his crotch that he also hits and then slaps him on the face (which finally works).
  • While chasing Trish (in her car) on his bike, Andy accidentally crashes through the side of a truck or the billboards one is carrying (coming out the other side) and landing on the road, but he's okay.
