QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Unable to bear children, a single businesswoman must deal with the consequences of hiring an uncouth woman to be the surrogate mother for her unborn child.
PLOT:
Kate Holbrook (TINA FEY) is the 37-year-old vice president of development for Round Earth, a Philadelphia-based organic food company run by Barry (STEVE MARTIN), a new age type leader. While Kate's quite successful at work, she'd really like to start a family. Yet, and much to the chagrin of her judgmental mother, Rose (HOLLAND TAYLOR), Kate is single and apparently unable to have children.

With adoption not in the picture but with the support of her sister, Caroline (MAURA TIERNEY), Kate visits Chaffee Bicknell (SIGOURNEY WEAVER) who specializes in matching women like her with surrogate moms. Accordingly, Chaffee pairs Kate with Angie Ostrowiski (AMY POEHLER) who initially seems like a nice young woman. Yet, Angie turns out to be the uncouth wife to common law husband Carl (DAX SHEPARD), points not lost on Kate's ever-observant doorman, Oscar (ROMANY MALCO).

Nevertheless, and with Kate's fertilized egg implanted in Angie, Kate tries to go about doing her work, which includes opening a new store in a rebuilding neighborhood. It's there that she meets Rob (GREG KINNEAR), the owner of an independent fruit drink company struggling to compete with the big boys. After a bit of a rough start, the two end up falling for each other.

Yet, she can't bring it upon herself to tell him about Angie who's since dumped Carl and moved in with her. Wanting the best for her baby inside Angie, Kate constantly reprimands her for her bad behavior. When Angie realizes she's isn't pregnant with Kate's baby, she must decide what to do.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of someone in the cast they might, but a film about a 37-year-old woman wanting to have a baby might not sound that enticing to others.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG-13
For crude and sexual humor, language and a drug reference.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • TINA FEY plays a 37-year-old businesswoman who desperately wants to have a baby but can't, and ultimately decides to use Angie as the surrogate mom to her unborn child. While trying to balance work with her new love for Rob (with whom she sleeps), she tries to keep Angie on the straight and narrow, especially after the two become unexpected roommates. She drinks (quite a lot in one scene), often sports cleavage, and uses some profanity.
  • AMY POEHLER plays the uncouth woman chosen to be the surrogate mom. Unrefined and raw, she tries to get Kate to loosen up a bit and have fun. She drinks some, uses some profanity, and doesn't come clean to Kate about the pregnancy.
  • GREG KINNEAR plays the owner of a fruit drink company who starts dating and finally beds Kate, unaware of her arrangement with Angie.
  • DAX SHEPARD plays Angie's common law husband who's just as unrefined as she is, and is allowing her to do the surrogacy thing just for the money. He drinks some.
  • ROMANY MALCO plays the somewhat flamboyant doorman at Kate's building who ends up befriending Angie but tells her she needs to do the right thing in regards to Kate.
  • SIGOURNEY WEAVER plays a middle-aged woman and new mom who runs the surrogate mother program that pairs Kate and Angie.
  • STEVE MARTIN plays Kate's boss, the new age owner of an organic foods company who behaves in odd ways at times, and admits to smoking pot in the past.
  • MAURA TIERNEY plays Kate's married sister who encourages her efforts to have a child.
  • HOLLAND TAYLOR plays their judgmental mother who doesn't approve of Kate's lifestyle or the way she plans on having a child.. She also appears to be something of a racist.

Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG-13. Profanity consists of at least 1 variation of the "f" word and 4 uses of the "s" word, while other expletives and colorful phrases are uttered. Sexually related dialogue and some song lyrics are present, as are varying bits about conception, pregnancy and such. There are varying amounts of cleavage, while off-screen sex occurs (and results in a pregnancy).

Brief, comedy-based violence occurs, as does all sorts of behavior that might be enticing for some kids to imitate. Comedy-based bad attitudes are present, as is crude humor, most but not all of it being verbally based. A character admits to smoking pot in the past, while drinking is present (including a lot in one sequence) as is some smoking related material. There's also brief and similarly comedy-based tense family material.
