QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: A pampered, talking Chihuahua from Beverly Hills hopes to stay steps ahead of a dogfighter and his menacing Doberman while trying to make it back home with the reluctant help of a German Shepherd.
PLOT:
Chloe (voice of DREW BARRYMORE) is a pampered Chihuahua that lives a highly pampered and high society life in Beverly Hills with her human owner, cosmetics tycoon Vivian Ashe (JAMIE LEE CURTIS) who loves her dog more than anything else in the world. Accordingly, when she has to leave on a multi-city business tour, she asks her young adult niece, Rachel (PIPER PERABO), to watch Chloe. Rachel agrees, but then heads south of the border to Mexico with her friends. While out partying, Chloe manages to escape from her hotel room and is then dog-napped by men working for dogfight ring leader, Vasquez (JOSÉ MARÍA YAZPIK).

There, little Chloe is pitted against the menacing Doberman pincher champion, Diablo (voice of EDWARD JAMES OLMOS), but is saved at the last minute by Delgado (voice of ANDY GARCIA), a world-weary but still capable German shepherd with a troubled past. Having done his duty, he wants nothing more to do with the spoiled pooch, but feels sorry for her and reluctantly agrees to help try get her back home. At the same time, once Vivian's landscaper, Sam Cortez (MANOLO CARDONA), and his dog, Papi (voice of GEORGE LOPEZ), who's in love with Chloe, hear of her disappearance, they set out on a rescue mission, eventually joining Rachel.

As they try to find the missing dog, Delgado tries to get her to safety, all while having to deal with the conniving rat Manuel (voice of CHEECH MARIN) and his iguana friend Chico (voice of PAUL RODRIGUEZ) who are after Chloe's diamond necklace, as well as Diablo who's hot on their trail and determined to bring the valuable dog back to his master.

It's a good bet many younger ones will, particularly if they're into talking animal movies.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: PG
For some mild thematic elements.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • PIPER PERABO plays Vivian's young adult niece who's never worked a day in her life and is inadvertently responsible for losing Chloe. She then sets out to find the dog before her aunt discovers she's missing, joining forces with Sam despite initially looking down at him for being the Hispanic landscaper.
  • MANOLO CARDONA plays that man who works for Vivian and puts everything aside, including his initial distaste toward Rachel (due to her earlier treatment of him), to set off in hopes of finding Chloe.
  • JAMIE LEE CURTIS plays Chloe's owner who's pampered her to no end.
  • JOSÉ MARÍA YAZPIK plays the ringleader of the dogfighting circuit who wants to find Chloe figuring she must be worth a pretty ransom.
  • CHLOE is the pampered and snooty Chihuahua who gets her comeuppance as well as an eye-opening experience after being dog-napped in Mexico and then finding herself on the run with Delgado with nary a creature comfort to be found.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this comedy that's been rated PG. One religious-based and various colorful phrases are uttered, while some brief, non-explicit and dog-related sexual comments are made. A song repeats the line "I'm too sexy for..." and some women are seen in small bikinis and shirtless men are also seen.

There's some brief violence, some action-based, some of the comedy variety, while a bit of slapstick style material is also present. Some scenes, including moments of potential peril might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to younger viewers, while some handguns are briefly present during police action.

Various bad attitudes are present, some behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate, there's some brief drinking, and there's a little bit of crude humor.

Should you still be concerned about the film's appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home, you may want to look more closely at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Papi asks Chloe if she wants to get a "drink" later, adding he knows of a nice puddle.
  • Rachel's friends have tropical drinks.
  • Miscellaneous people have wine.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see a man put a plastic bag over his hand to pick up Chloe's unseen poop.
  • Thinking they're going in circles in the desert, Chloe tells Delgado that she tinkled over near a tree, but he can't smell that.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Chloe and Rachel have bad attitudes about each other, but express them to their friends since they can't otherwise communicate those feelings toward each other.
  • Chloe looks down on Papi with a condescending attitude (although this eventually changes).
  • Rachel looks down on Sam for being the Hispanic gardener (although this eventually changes).
  • Vasquez's men dog-nap Chloe to place her into one of Vasquez's dogfights. He has a bad attitude for running that, as well as for wanting Chloe back to be used for ransom.
  • Rachel barks into a phone to make Vivian think she's hearing Chloe and doesn't admit to her aunt that the dog is missing.
  • Manuel and Chico do a con bit where the latter appears to be eating the former who yells to Chloe for help. He does so in order to convince her to give up her diamond necklace and spends the rest of the film trying to get it back once he loses possession of it.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • The following might be unsettling and/or suspenseful to younger viewers, but less so, if at all, to older ones:
  • Vasquez's men dog-nap Chloe to place her into one of Vasquez's dogfights.
  • Diablo acts menacingly toward Chloe in the dogfight pit and starts to approach her again when Delgado rescues her. The two of them and other dogs flee, with various humans chasing Delgado and Chloe.
  • Some skull-based and related costumes in a Day of the Dead parade might be unsettling or even scary to very young viewers (beyond the sight of them, the scene isn't played to be scary).
  • Diablo comes at Chloe, but Delgado rescues her once again.
  • Delgado runs to jump onto a moving train, but is slightly short and dangles from the side, with Chloe then doing the same after trying to help pull him in.
  • We see a flashback of Delgado accompanying cops armed with handguns on a bust. We then see quick views of Diablo attacking Delgado and Vasquez attacking Delgado's cop partner, with the latter then being laid out flat on the floor.
  • Delgado and Chloe take cover when they hear the sound of a mountain lion. Moments later, three menacing mountain lions approach and Delgado confronts them. Just then, a large dust cloud approaches and it's a bunch of Chihuahuas that scare off the mountain lions.
  • Diablo grabs Chloe in his mouth and runs off, delivering her to Vasquez. When Vasquez's assistant goes to put Chloe in the van, Papi jumps out onto him, biting him on the nose and holding on there. Diablo then comes after Papi and Chloe, with the latter falling through old ruins (we don't see the impact below).
  • As Vasquez goes after Chloe, Diablo goes after Papi. But Chloe finally gets her bark and its resounding depth causes part of the ruins they're in to collapse (no one is hurt).
  • After jumping and knocking down Vasquez so that a cop can pin him to the floor while arresting him, Delgado jumps on Diablo who then knocks him aside. Chloe then jumps on Diablo's back, but he flings her off, leaving her unconscious (Papi thinks she's dead -- as might some younger kids -- but she then shows she's just faking that to get Papi to say how he really feels about her). Delgado then jumps on Diablo, pinning him to the ground.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • We see a flashback of Delgado accompanying cops armed with handguns on a bust.
  • Cops hold handguns on Vasquez's assistant while arresting him.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "Talk to the paw," "Hello, Jackie-O," "I love the smell of dirt in the morning," "Woof!" "Chica," "Gringa," "Hold your tacos," "Say it, don't spray it," "Oh no she didn't," "We're Mexi-can, not Mexi-can't," "C'mon fool, let's go," "Puh-leaze," "Don't push me," "I'm gonna kick some tail, Papi style," "Shake your last booty" (referring to a dog's shoe) "You're driving me crazy," "No fool," "It's minty," "Oh, I'm gonna go all kinds of Mexican on them," "I tinkled there," "Say hello to my little friends," "Yeah, mighty annoying," "No mas," "Last one in the house is a chew toy," "You're so busted," "For the love of bananas," "Aye Chihuahua" and "That's Mexico number five."
  • After Rachel feeds her regular dog food, Chloe puts a chuck of it into Rachel's shoe (with the latter's foot then stepping into that).
  • It's possible some kids could imitate staging dogfights.
  • Rachel barks into a phone to make Vivian think she's hearing Chloe.
  • Not long after running and jumping onto a moving train, Delgado jumps off it, with Chloe then doing the same, landing on him.
  • Rachel wears a top that shows some of her bare midriff.
