Danny Donahue (PAUL RUDD) and his coworker Wheeler (SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT) peddle a high energy drink known as Minotaur to high school students by arguing that it's good while drugs are bad. Yet, Danny isn't happy with the realization that the last decade of his life has slipped away. His increasingly sardonic attitude eventually forces his live-in, lawyer girlfriend, Beth (ELIZABETH BANKS), to move out. When the guys' company vehicle is towed, Danny finally loses it, and the resultant property damage lands him and Wheeler in trouble with the law.
Thanks to Beth's pull, they avoid jail time, but must serve 150 hours of community service with a program known as Sturdy Wings that mentors young kids through the likes of long-server participant, Martin Gary (A.D. MILES). Its leader and recovered drug addict, Gayle Sweeny (JANE LYNCH), doesn't cut Danny or Wheeler any slack, assigning the latter to work with foul-mouthed, ten-year-old Ronnie Shields (BOBB'E J. THOMPSON), son of single mom, Karen (NICOLE RANDALL JOHNSON), while Danny gets teenager Augie Farks (CHRISTOPHER MINTZ-PLASSE).
He's the son of Lynette (KERRI KENNEY-SILVER), but neither she nor her boyfriend, Jim Stansel (KEN MARINO), understand his involvement in a highly organized, role-playing fantasy world where kids and adults, such as ruler King Argotron (KEN JEONG), participate in faked, medieval style warfare.
While Danny and Wheeler aren't any more enthusiastic about their participation than their young charges, they persevere, first to complete their required time, but eventually because they come to care about the boys under their occasional care.
