QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: Rather than serve time in jail, two coworkers reluctantly end up in a mentoring program where they must work with kids who don't want them around.
PLOT:
Danny Donahue (PAUL RUDD) and his coworker Wheeler (SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT) peddle a high energy drink known as Minotaur to high school students by arguing that it's good while drugs are bad. Yet, Danny isn't happy with the realization that the last decade of his life has slipped away. His increasingly sardonic attitude eventually forces his live-in, lawyer girlfriend, Beth (ELIZABETH BANKS), to move out. When the guys' company vehicle is towed, Danny finally loses it, and the resultant property damage lands him and Wheeler in trouble with the law.

Thanks to Beth's pull, they avoid jail time, but must serve 150 hours of community service with a program known as Sturdy Wings that mentors young kids through the likes of long-server participant, Martin Gary (A.D. MILES). Its leader and recovered drug addict, Gayle Sweeny (JANE LYNCH), doesn't cut Danny or Wheeler any slack, assigning the latter to work with foul-mouthed, ten-year-old Ronnie Shields (BOBB'E J. THOMPSON), son of single mom, Karen (NICOLE RANDALL JOHNSON), while Danny gets teenager Augie Farks (CHRISTOPHER MINTZ-PLASSE).

He's the son of Lynette (KERRI KENNEY-SILVER), but neither she nor her boyfriend, Jim Stansel (KEN MARINO), understand his involvement in a highly organized, role-playing fantasy world where kids and adults, such as ruler King Argotron (KEN JEONG), participate in faked, medieval style warfare.

While Danny and Wheeler aren't any more enthusiastic about their participation than their young charges, they persevere, first to complete their required time, but eventually because they come to care about the boys under their occasional care.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
Since kids are featured prominently in the ads, some might be drawn by that, while fans of anyone in the cast might also be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For crude and sexual content, strong language and nudity.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • PAUL RUDD plays a sardonic 35-year-old man who isn't happy with where his life is or that he's been working for the high energy drink company for the past decade. His bitterness and mocking attitude drive his long-time girlfriend away and results in him having to serve 150 hours of community service where he's paired with Augie. He isn't pleased with that, but tries to gamely go along, eventually coming to care about the teen. He uses strong profanity.
  • SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT plays his more laidback coworker whose job is to don a minotaur costume while Danny does the anti-drug pitch at schools. He has casual sex, uses strong profanity, appears to smoke pot in one scene, drinks some, and isn't sure how to handle Ronnie and that boy's behavior.
  • CHRISTOPHER MINTZ-PLASSE plays a frustrated but otherwise fairly normal and somewhat sweet teen who's escaped into a role-playing fantasy world and isn't initially pleased that Danny's been assigned as his mentor, or that his mom and her boyfriend don't understand his behavior. He uses some profanity, some of that briefly strong.
  • BOBB'E J. THOMPSON plays a foul-mouthed, all attitude 10-year-old boy with a reputation for making his mentors flee into the night, and he tries the same with Wheeler. He uses strong profanity, generally acts up, and is fixated on women's breasts.
  • ELIZABETH BANKS plays Danny's live-in girlfriend, a lawyer who's eventually fed up with his bad attitude and thus moves out, although she assists him and Wheeler when they need legal help. She uses strong profanity.
  • JANE LYNCH plays the leader of the Sturdy Wings program, a recovering addict and type A personality who never hesitates to bring up her past drug and alcohol problems. She uses profanity.
  • KEN JEONG plays an adult in the role-playing fantasy world who takes his position as king a bit too seriously.
  • NICOLE RANDALL JOHNSON plays Ronnie's mom who makes sure Wheeler knows she'll take him down if anything happens to her son.
  • KERRI KENNEY-SILVER plays Augie's mom who wishes he'd stop with the fantasy world stuff, which also holds true for her boyfriend played by KEN MARINO. Both of them drink.
  • A.D. MILES plays an enthusiastic veteran of the Sturdy Wings program who tries to give Danny and Wheeler pointers and help.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a quick look at the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 31 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Sexually related dialogue is present, as is sexual activity (fooling around with implied, off-screen sex). and related humor (including explicit drawings done by a kid who's also fixated on women's breasts), suggestive behavior involving a hot dog, and nudity (breasts, full male rear nudity).

Some comedy style fighting and hitting of others (as well as fantasy swordplay) is present, as is all sorts of other behavior (including lots of cussing by a 10-year-old) that kids might want to imitate. Various characters have bad attitudes (but most are played for comedy), various characters drink, one appears to smoke pot, and various references to past drug use are made. Some crude humor is present, which also holds true for some tense family material.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, there's occasional handheld camera movement in the film, including some that's fairly bouncy.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Various comments are made about drugs in Danny's anti-drug message to students (that's also promoting their energy drink).
  • Wheeler smokes what looks like pot.
  • Wheeler says what he likes about his job is that it's easy to do hung-over.
  • As Wheeler pours some energy drink and liquor into a woman's mouth and down her cleavage (she's into that), someone says, "She's tasting your beast" (which is a play on the slogan for the drink).
  • Wheeler comments on him and Danny later having some "brewskies."
  • Disgusted with his life, Danny does his anti-drug speech again for students, but then talks about life being hard, smoking (pot) to eliminate the pain, and "I'll drink to that."
  • About her past, Gayle states that 12 years ago she was a raging alcoholic and had a massive drug addiction.
  • Ronnie picks up an empty beer bottle off a table in Wheeler's place.
  • About her past, Gayle says that she used to eat cocaine for breakfast and lunch.
  • Gayle asks Augie if Danny ever offered him drugs and the teen says no.
  • People drink at a party, and we then see more of that later.
  • Lynette has wine while Jim has a beer.
  • About a situation that's developed, Gayle sarcastically says she could be back in New York doing cocaine.
  • After being "killed" in the mock fantasy battle, Wheeler states he's going to get a beer. People hold mugs at that fantasy battle, but we don't know what's in them, but Jim has a beer, as does Wheeler.
  • About getting a judge to reconsider sending Wheeler and Danny to jail, Gayle states, "I used to suck his d*ck for drugs."
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Danny says he has to "piss" (after drinking lots of their company's energy drink), and we then see him and Wheeler standing at urinals, and then a view of one's green pee from that (referred to as "nuclear horse piss").
  • We briefly see the side of Martin's bare butt as he sits on a literal can, apparently defecating (we don't see or hear anything related to that behavior).
  • While camping, Wheeler gets up, stating he has to pee, but we don't see that occur.
  • About embarrassing things, Danny tells Augie that he once "crapped" his pants in front of a girl he liked.
  • Gayle warns Wheeler that she'll chew up his ass to the point that he'll "sh*t" sideways, with him then repeating that.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Most of the following is played for comedy.
  • Seeing Wheeler in his full minotaur costume, some young kids say he's a "homo" and from the gay zoo. Wheeler then says that one of the boy's moms let him keep the costume "after I f*cked her."
  • Danny gets into it with a coffee shop employee about the names of their various sizes. When she describes what they mean, he sarcastically replies, "Congratulations, you're stupid in three languages."
  • Disgusted with his life, Danny does his anti-drug speech again for students, but then talks about life being hard, smoking (pot) to eliminate the pain, and "I'll drink to that."
  • About Wheeler in his minotaur costume, a man refers to him as a "fuzzy faggot."
  • After Gayle shows the right and wrong way to hug any of the kids, Wheeler tells Danny, "Obviously, we're not supposed to butt-f*ck those kids." About the prospect of going to prison, Wheeler tells Danny that they'll get raped and then asks him, "Do you want to get raped?" When Gayle walks up at just that last statement, Wheeler thinks she's misunderstood his comment as a gay sex one.
  • Some viewers might not like the profanity, sexual talk and other adult humor involving Ronnie (and to a lesser extent, Augie).
  • We see a drawing of a penis that Ronnie has done as he then falsely accuses Wheeler of trying to grab his "junk" and wanting his pants down (he does this in front of others to try to drive Wheeler away). When Wheeler later comments on that to Danny, the latter says that Augie would probably "come in his pants" if Danny suggested Quidditch.
  • Ronnie throws food onto Wheeler and Danny.
  • About Augie's fantasy world game play, Ronnie says it sounds "gay."
  • After Augie bows in his presence, King Argotron tells Danny to "bow as your daughter does" (but Danny won't).
  • Ronnie twice kicks down the tent Danny has erected.
  • After a woman comes on to him, Wheeler says that he thought she was engaged, but she says she has an arrangement where she's only faithful within the boundaries of Los Angeles.
  • Telling campfire ghost stories, Danny says he has a scary tale about kids abducted for the sex trade business, but others quickly stop his story.
  • After no one believes Augie when he says he "killed" King Argotron in a mock fantasy battle, they all laugh at and mock Augie when he starts crying. That gets Danny mad and he shoves King Argotron backwards.
  • Wheeler takes Ronnie along to an adult party, and then leaves him with a friend playing video games while he (Wheeler) goes off to have sex.
  • Lynette and Jim aren't supportive of Augie's involvement in the fantasy world, and that leads to family tension.
  • During the mock battle, King Argotron tells Lynette, "You shut up, whore" and then punches Augie in the face (when the rest of the role-playing violence has been faked).
  • About having witnessed the fantasy battle, Jim states it's not as gay as he thought it would be.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • None.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Various scenes feature fake swords used in the fantasy world league's mock battle scenes.
  • There's non-graphic sword battling seen in a primitive looking video game.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "F*ck it," "Get the f*ck out of the way, asshole," "You guys are f*cked," "What the f*ck is Sturdy Wings?" • Some kids may want to imitate the fantasy role playing, including the costumes and fake sword battles, while some might also be inspired to dress up like the rock group KISS (as occurs later in the film).
  • As Wheeler pours some energy drink and liquor into a woman's mouth and down her cleavage (she's into that), someone says, "She's tasting your beast" (which is a play on the slogan for the drink).
  • One or more kids throws lots of popcorn on Danny and then Wheeler.
  • Gayle has a tattoo on her arm.
  • We see a drawing of a penis that Ronnie has done as he then falsely accuses Wheeler of trying to grab his "junk" and wanting his pants down (he does this in front of others to try to drive Wheeler away).
  • Ronnie shakes his clothed butt in a restaurant.
  • Ronnie throws food onto Wheeler and Danny.
  • Ronnie gives "the finger" to Wheeler.
  • After Wheeler gets out of the truck, Ronnie locks the doors and then starts to drive the truck.
  • Danny and Wheeler hit each other in an open jeep as Wheeler drives, followed by Ronnie imitating that by hitting Augie (all played for comedy). When they drop off Ronnie, he slaps Wheeler on the face before getting out, while Danny gets in one more punch to Wheeler's shoulder.
  • Ronnie does some playful and clothed, pelvic thrusting.
  • Ronnie twice kicks down the tent Danny has erected.
  • Ronnie repeatedly refers to Danny as Ben Affleck (simply for being a white guy).
  • During a montage, we see Ronnie shaping the sand "breasts" he's molded on top of Danny who's lying in the sand.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • About the rock group KISS, Wheeler tells Ronnie that all of their songs are about "f*cking." He explains that "love gun" in one song (that we hear part of) is about the singer's "d*ck."
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 31 "f" words (1 used with "mother," 9 used sexually as are the terms "hit it" and variations of "bang"), 35 "s" words, 22 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck," "c*ck," "pr*ck," "beast," "junk" and "love gun"), 10 using female ones ("p*ssy," "whispering eye" and "cooz"), 14 for breasts (variations of "boob"), 18 asses (5 used with "hole"), 7 hells, 3 damns, 1 crap, 4 uses each of "G-damn" and "Oh my God," 2 each of "Jesus Christ" and "Oh God" and 1 use each of "God Awful," "Jesus," "Oh Jesus" and "Swear to God."
  • In addition, there are various uses of "B-S" instead of the full word "bullsh*t."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • After a woman drops off Wheeler, he asks Danny to guess what he did last night and tries to get him to smell his fingers (Danny won't, so Wheeler smells his own fingertips).
  • Seeing Wheeler in his full minotaur costume, some young kids say he's a "homo" and from the gay zoo. Wheeler then says that one of the boy's moms let him keep the costume "after I f*cked her."
  • Beth shows some cleavage, as does a miscellaneous woman.
  • As Wheeler pours some energy drink and liquor into a woman's mouth and down her cleavage (she's into that), someone says, "She's tasting your beast" (which is a play on the slogan for the drink).
  • Wheeler tells Danny, "You gotta hit it" (have sex) and "bang, bang, bang the drum."
  • We hear that Danny and Beth have been living together (with sex thus implied), but she then moves out when she can't put up with his downer attitude any longer.
  • A visual joke on the part of the film is the guys' promo truck ending up wedged up behind and against a statue, giving it something of a rear entry sex look.
  • About her past, Gayle states, "My mother, out of necessity, was a whore."
  • Wheeler tries coming on to another woman in the program, she tells him she's engaged, and he replies that he sort of has a "boner."
  • Thinking he's alone, Augie does bits of fantasy swordplay, followed by exaggerated French kissing and groping of a girl's breast (imagining he's doing both).
  • Wheeler tells Danny that Beth is probably "banging" her boss (and there's another sexual use of that term), with Danny reminding him that the boss is a woman.
  • Gayle pushes the end of a hotdog out of its pastry "bun," all in a suggestive way toward Wheeler. During the end credits, she does the same with Jim (she pushes it out, he pushes it back in again, and that's repeated many times).
  • About Beth's female friend, Wheeler tells Danny that the "bigger ones do way more stuff" (meaning sexually).
  • Lynette shows cleavage in several scenes.
  • About something about King Argotron, Danny sarcastically asks if that's when he is or isn't "whacking off" to the Sims (video game).
  • About the rock group KISS, Wheeler tells Ronnie that all of their songs are about "f*cking." He explains that "love gun" in one song is about the singer's "d*ck." He then says that they've been getting "p*ssy" for thirty years, are "probably f*cking right now" and "His d*ck is his gun," all of which prompts Ronnie to do some playful and clothed, pelvic thrusting.
  • Wheeler tries a pick-up line on a woman by saying she's "sexy like a chocolate strawberry."
  • Ronnie points out some "boobies" on another camper, with Wheeler then teaching him how to look at women's chests without drawing attention to that activity. During this, there are various comments about women's breasts, mostly in variations of the term "boob," while we also see one woman's ample cleavage as she's bent over, and another woman in a small and tight top.
  • We briefly see the side of Martin's bare butt as he sits on a literal can, apparently defecating (we don't see or hear anything related to that behavior).
  • A woman puts her hand down inside Wheeler's pants while they're off camping, asking what she has. He says his testicles and that he thought she was engaged, but she says she has an arrangement where she's only faithful within the boundaries of Los Angeles. Wheeler then retrieves some prescription sleeping medication, saying he and the woman are going to take it, as trying to stay awake is kind of "trippy," and that then "We're gonna f*ck." We next see Wheeler and the woman lying side by side in a tent, kissing, and he tries to keep her awake. Elsewhere, when someone asks Danny where Wheeler is, he replies, "He's having sex with a married lady." We then see Wheeler get up and state he has to pee. He's fully nude and we first only see his bare torso, but then a full rear nude view, both walking and then passed out or asleep, face down, on the ground the next morning.
  • Telling campfire ghost stories, Danny says he has a scary tale about kids abducted for the sex trade business, but others quickly stop his story.
  • Gayle asks Ronnie if Wheeler ever exposed himself to him, and Ronnie says no.
  • During a montage, we see Ronnie shaping the sand "breasts" he's molded on top of Danny who's lying in the sand.
  • A student asks Wheeler how many dates one must go on before you can touch (but doesn't complete the question about breasts), while another asks about STDs, including gonorrhea, herpes and crabs.
  • As Danny calls and leaves a message for Beth on her phone, Augie keeps trying to get him to say "whispering eye" in his message. Danny finally does and Augie is enthusiastically shocked, laughing that it means vagina.
  • Beth shows cleavage.
  • A guy tells Wheeler that there will be some "sweet ass p*ssy" at a party. About that party, Ronnie tells Wheeler, "Don't c*ck-block me tonight."
  • We see miscellaneous cleavage.
  • Wheeler meets a teacher at a party, and they immediately hit it off, with passionate kissing, and then her doing some exaggerated, sexually charged teacher behavior (with him commenting that's one of his top fantasies). However, he then says he can't since he's in charge of Ronnie who's elsewhere at the party, but the woman then removes her top and then climbs on top of him in just her panties (we see bare breasts) and he changes his mind.
  • About her boyfriend Jim, Lynette states he was "f*cking" his cousin, but he says he "f*cked" her friend, while another sexual use of the "f" word occurs.
  • Danny and Wheeler argue (in front of a woman and her young child) about Wheeler leaving Ronnie alone at a party so that he could have sex. Danny asks about Wheeler getting a "blow job," with Wheeler saying it wasn't that and instead "we f*cked."
  • We see that Ronnie has created a crude cartoon on a plate that reads "Martin is gay for robots" and shows a cartoon image of an erect penis inserted in a blocky-style robot.
  • Although not meant sexually (and instead is about the fantasy battle), King Argotron states, "I would love to see you penetrate me again" (with the film playing that as a double entendre). Later, the same occurs when a character states they should gently touch (sword) tips.
  • We see Danny's bare chest in his KISS costume.
  • About getting a judge to reconsider sending Wheeler and Danny to jail, Gayle states, "I used to suck his d*ck for drugs."
  • Danny and Beth passionately kiss.
  • SMOKING
  • None.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Trying to connect with Ronnie, Wheeler says that his dad also left when he (Wheeler) was young.
  • Lynette and Jim aren't supportive of Augie's involvement in the fantasy world, and that leads to family tension.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Casual sex.
  • Danny being bitter and sarcastic, and finding little joy in anything.
  • Mentoring programs.
  • Fantasy style role playing.
  • Some viewers might not like the profanity, sexual talk and other adult humor involving Ronnie (and to a lesser extent, Augie).
  • VIOLENCE
  • Several scenes feature mock fantasy battles with swords and such in a role-playing medieval style league, but beyond additional entries listed below, no real violence occurs in them.
  • After finding their promo truck about to be towed, Danny gets in, starts his truck, and then pulls the tow truck backwards, lifting up its front. During this, Danny opens the truck door and knocks down a security guard, and when the lift cable breaks, the promo truck races forward and over the guard, landing up against a statue (the guard is unharmed).
  • After no one believes Augie when he says he "killed" King Argotron in a mock fantasy battle, they all laugh at and mock Augie when he starts crying. That gets Danny mad and he shoves King Argotron backwards.
  • Augie repeatedly whacks a sign with his fake sword (in frustration over being kicked out of the fantasy league.
  • Danny and Wheeler get into a brief fight (struggling, whacking, etc.) in an elevator (played for comedy).
  • We see footage from a cheesy prison movie where a person is stabbed (non-graphically) and then thrown over a railing (no impact is seen below).
  • There's another mock sword battle with fake stabbing, slicing and such. During this, however, an adult kicks Danny down, while Danny later playfully hits Wheeler in the crotch after the latter's character is "dead." Later and during their mock battle, King Argotron punches Augie in the face for real.
