QUICK TAKE:
Comedy: An extract plant owner finds his professional and personal life progressively unraveling due to bad choices that he and others make.
PLOT:
Joel Reynolds (JASON BATEMAN) is the founder and owner of Reynolds Extracts, a small manufacturer of concentrated food flavorings. While he and his partner, Brian (J.K. SIMMONS), have to deal with various personnel issues -- such as line worker Mary (BETH GRANT) thinking new employee Hector (JAVIER GUTIERREZ) isn't carrying his weight -- for the most part, the company works quite well and is in the sights of a larger company that wants to purchase it.

That, of course, would allow Joel to retire and spend more time with his wife, Suzie (KRISTEN WIG), which is important to him since their lovemaking has completely stopped. While there are obviously various marital issues at play, some of that also stems from their neighbor, Nathan (DAVID KOECHNER), who's always wasting their time chatting about trivial matters.

But Joel's life begins to crumble when Mary momentarily refuses to work, thus leading to a chain reaction on the plant floor involving forklift driver Rory (T.J. MILLER) and fellow employee Step (CLIFTON COLLINS JR.) who ends up injured in the process. That not only eventually leads to ambulance chaser lawyer Joe Adler (GENE SIMMONS) showing up smelling a lawsuit, but also attractive small-time thief Cindy (MILA KUNIS).

Posing as a new temp, her goal is to get in bed with Step -- not literally since his injury was of the testicle variety -- but she ends up drawing the attention of Joel. His bartender friend, Dean (BEN AFFLECK), eventually convinces Joel that if Suzie cheated on him, it would be okay for him to cheat on her. Accordingly, and while under the influence, Joel agrees to have dimwitted gigolo Brad (DUSTIN MILLIGAN) pose as their new pool boy and see if she'll take the seduction bait.

From that point on, and as everyone ends up making bad choices, Joel's professional and personal life progressively unravels.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of anyone in the cast or works by Mike Judge ("Office Space," "King of the Hill") they might be interested.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For language, sexual references and some drug use.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • JASON BATEMAN plays the founder and owner of an extract company whose work life is better than his married one, what with his wife no longer being interested in sex. Accordingly, when Cindy enters his field of view as a temp, he's enticed, and while under the influence of pot, he agrees to hire Brad to seduce his wife so that he can pursue Cindy guilt free. He uses strong profanity as well as drugs, drinks, and ends up regretting the decisions he and others make.
  • KRISTEN WIG plays his wife who's no longer interested in having sex with him, but quickly has a repeated affair with Brad when he shows up. She also uses profanity.
  • BEN AFFLECK plays Joel's best friend, a bartender who not only convinces him to do drugs, but also encourages him to hire Brad to have an affair with Suzie so that he can then cheat with Cindy. He drinks and appears to be high from unseen pot smoking (on his part).
  • J.K. SIMMONS plays Joel's partner who's only interested in selling the company and doesn't know any of the plant employees' names and belittles most of them, calling them "dinkus" or "boy genius."
  • MILA KUNIS plays a small-time thief who sees a potentially huge payday in Step if she can get in close with him and then convince him to sue over his injury. She poses as a temp at work and thus draws her boss' libido-based attention.
  • CLIFTON COLLINS JR. plays a production line employee at the plant who wants to be the floor supervisor, but is injured in a freak accident that leaves him with only one testicle. While he initially isn't interested in a lawsuit, he changes his tune when Cindy enters his life (he's unaware of her ulterior motives) and gets ambulance chaser lawyer Adler involved.
  • DUSTIN MILLIGAN plays a dimwitted gigolo who Joel hires (through Dean) to seduce Suzie. He does, but then ends up falling for her, and thus has additional sexual encounters with her.
  • BETH GRANT plays a middle-aged woman at the plant who isn't pleased with new employee Hector, thinking he isn't pulling his weight at work and then that he's stealing from others (he isn't).
  • T.J. MILLER plays a heavily tattooed and pierced factory forklift driver at the plant (and heavy metal head-banger on the side) who ends up partially leading an organized labor movement among the employees.
  • GENE SIMMONS plays an ambulance chaser type of lawyer who represents Step and wants to take Joel and his company for everything that they're worth. He uses strong profanity.
  • DAVID KOECHNER plays Joel and Suzie's neighbor who won't leave them alone despite their direct comments and clues that they're not interested in conversing with him.
  • JAVIER GUTIERREZ plays a new employee at the plant who draws the ire of Mary.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
Here's a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 6 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. All sorts of sexually related dialogue is present, as is some brief fooling around on camera, while off-screen sex occurs. Some of that includes an affair that only exacerbates an already strained marriage (although this is mostly played for laughs).

Violence consists of a workplace accident where a man's testicles are injured (not directly seen) as well as a punch, while a non-violent death (apparently of a heart attack, and played for laughs) also occurs.

Drug use (pot, an unknown pill) and drinking occur, while drug-related comments are made. All sorts of bad attitudes are present, as is some potentially imitative behavior.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Dean calls Joel to inform him that they'll be having half-price drinks that evening.
  • Joel has a beer when he gets home.
  • Joel has a drink in a bar as do others.
  • After Joel complains that he hasn't had sex in a long time, Dean tells him he should take Xanax as it works for everything, including sexual frustration. He then adds that codeine-laced cough syrup is good as well.
  • Dean tells Joel that the latter's temps usually look like winos.
  • Joel has a drink in Dean's bar as do others. As Dean begins to tell Joel how to cure his woes, Joel says he doesn't want drugs. Moments later, Dean keeps insisting that Joel take a pill he's retrieved from a small container of many different kinds, and Joel finally does (with a shot of liquor) just to make him stop insisting. Dean is then a bit concerned, saying he doesn't know what kind he just gave Joel, saying it could be Ritalin or special K, eventually deciding it was a horse tranquilizer. He then says Joel should stop drinking, but moments later pours him another drink and tells him to have it.
  • Joel has beer with dinner.
  • Various people, including Cindy, drink beer at a small outdoor concert.
  • Dean and Joel have beer in a restaurant.
  • Joel tells Dean no more drugs, but Dean says he should be smoking pot. Joel reminds him that's a drug, but Dean says it's a flower, followed by Joel saying he gets paranoid smoking pot. Nonetheless, he goes with Dean to see the latter's friend who inhales from an enormous bong pipe, and then exhales a great deal of pot smoke. He then pressures Joel into doing the same, and we then see Joel's slightly distorted point of view while high (Dean is apparently high as well). That's followed by talk of Joel being "stoned."
  • People have drinks in a bar.
  • About Joel and what's occurred, Dean says that some people are not meant to do drugs.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • Joel has a large black eye from being punched.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • Cindy pretends to be interested in a guitar at a music store, only to steal one when the employees (who ignore another customer due to being smitten with her) go off to retrieve another for her. She then sells that at a pawn shop, using a sob story to get more money.
  • Rory states that his heavy metal band is called "God's C*ck" (we also see that on a flyer). Some viewers might not like that humor.
  • Brian doesn't know any of the plant employees' names and belittles most of them, calling them "dinkus" or "boy genius" and complains about the gall of one who "axed" him for something.
  • While we don't know if it's a racist issue or what, Mary isn't happy with Hector's work at the plant (he's Hispanic and new to the job).
  • While he's just being friendly and neighborly, Nathan is also a pest who doesn't take "no" for an answer and repeatedly pesters Joel and Suzie despite them obviously indicating they'd rather not chat with him and/or don't have the time to do that. At the same time, they have bad attitudes toward him when not in his presence ("What an asshole") and then finally to his face when Suzie says he's the worst neighbor in the world.
  • Cindy reads a news story about Step's testicle injury woes and that he could get millions in a lawsuit, so she decides to make a move on him to get her hands on some of that money.
  • Brian jokingly says that when you lose your "balls" that tends to mellow you out.
  • Mary claims that Hector stole her purse (without any proof), but we then see that it was really Cindy who stole that.
  • In order to alleviate Joel's potential future guilt about cheating on his wife with Cindy, Dean says that Joel should hire a gigolo to seduce Suzie so that Joel can be "hooking up" with Cindy.
  • Suzie repeatedly cheats on Joel by having sex with Brad.
  • Various plant employees gossip at work without knowing all of the facts, thus getting everyone worked up.
  • Rory and others again stoke the plant rumor mill and get everyone worked up without knowing what's truly happening.
  • We see Cindy driving off in Adler's car, leaving him with Step's old truck (that she also stole).
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • After they all smoke pot, Dean's intense looking friend suddenly lunges at Joel, but does so as a joke since Joel has stated he gets paranoid smoking pot.
  • SPOILER ALERT: Tired of Nathan bugging them, Suzie tells him off, including that he's the worst neighbor in the world. He then collapses in front of her and we next see him dead in a coffin at his funeral (played for comedy).
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • None.
  • IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR
  • Phrases: "M*therf*cker," "Shut the f*ck up," "What the f*ck?" "Ah sh*t," "Sh*tty," "Can you imagine that sh*t?" "Bullsh*t," "Are you sh*tting me?" "God's C*ck" (the name of a band), "Snap it off" (masturbate), "Balls" (testicles), "She's a tramp?" "He's a whore," "Slut," "He just crushes ass" (sexual), "You're nothing more than a little piece of ass" (sexual), "Johnny horse c*ck," "They really kick ass," "Jesus, they're like a bunch of children," "I bet he sucks at that too," "What an asshole," "A pain in the ass," "Crappy," "Adios, dinkus," "Hell yeah," "Boy genius," "Oh damn," "Dude," "Bro," "It's so nuts," "What the hell /are you doing on my street?" • Rory has various tattoos and facial piercings.
  • While listening to Brad say on the phone how he seduced Suzie, Joel repeatedly slams the phone receiver down onto his desk in frustration/anger.
  • A friend of Dean's has tattoos.
  • JUMP SCENES
  • None.
  • MUSIC (SCARY/TENSE)
  • None.
  • MUSIC (INAPPROPRIATE)
  • A song has the lyrics, "Who were you thinking of when we were making love last night? Was it a good looking stranger or a close friend of mine? You didn't want to quit when we were into it last night."
  • A song includes the word "hell."
  • PROFANITY
  • At least 6 "f" words (1 used with "mother"), 26 "s" words, 11 slang terms for sex ("laid," "nail," "do," "did it," "hooking up," "banged" and what sounded like "drop the joy pole"), 7 slang terms using male genitals ("c*ck," "pr*ck," "dingleberry" and what sounded like "joy pole"), 18 asses (3 used with "hole"), 5 damns, 5 hells, 1 crap, 5 uses of "G-damn," 4 each of "Jesus Christ" and "Oh my God" and 1 use each of "For Christ's sakes," "God" and "Jesus."
  • SEX/NUDITY
  • Joel complains to Dean that there's no "action" going on at his house as he hasn't been "laid" in over a month. He adds that once Suzie dons her sweatpants at 8 p.m., that means he gets nothing (sexually).
  • Rory states that his heavy metal band is called "God's C*ck" (we also see that on a flyer). Some viewers might not like that humor.
  • Joel races home hoping to beat Suzie's 8 p.m. sweatpants deadline, but runs into Nathan who won't stop jabbering on about an upcoming event. By the time Joel finally gets into the house, he sees his wife cinching up the drawstring on those sweatpants (meaning there won't be any sex that night). He then asks if she wants to go to the bedroom, but she replies no, that she's tired.
  • Joel complains to Dean that it's hard to "jerk off" in the bathroom due to thin walls and sound issues. Dean says that Joel has too much masturbation shame and that he should be able to "snap it off" whenever and wherever he wants in his own house. Joel then says that Rory probably gets "laid" more than he does.
  • From an accident in the plant where Step was hit in the crotch, we hear that he lost one testicle and had the other reattached (all played for comedy). Joel and Dean then discuss that, including talk of "balls" and one just hanging there, but Joel then states that he doesn't use his, saying it's been a long time since he had sex. Dean then tells him he should take Xanax as it works for everything, including sexual frustration.
  • Cindy shows cleavage at the plant, and when Joel tells Dean she's a temp, he asks, "She's a tramp?" He then adds that Joel could "nail" any of the women who work there, but that he doesn't find any of them sexually attractive.
  • Joel complains that he and his wife don't "do it" anymore and instead live like brother and sister.
  • About not being tempted by Cindy, Joel says he just has to power through it until he's too old to "get it up."
  • In order to alleviate Joel's potential future guilt about cheating on his wife with Cindy, Dean says that Joel should hire a gigolo to seduce Suzie so that Joel can be "hooking up" with Cindy.
  • Cindy and Step briefly kiss, with her stopping, saying she's getting aroused and so is Step, but that he's not supposed to until after the trial.
  • Dean talks to Joel about what sounded like dropping the "joy pole" (meant sexually).
  • Dean arranges a meeting between Joel and Brad who's supposed to pose as the new pool boy and then seduce Suzie. Brad is dimwitted, however, and can't grasp that Joel won't be there at the time, so he first asks if Joel is going to watch and then if he's going to try to touch Brad's "ass" or anything like that. He then says he's a landscaper but likes getting "laid" more and often sees "horny" housewives at the club. Dean then says about Brad, "He's a whore."
  • Joel changes his mind about Brad seducing his wife and informs Dean he wants to call that off. He then receives a call from Brad, however, stating "mission accomplished" (meaning it's already happened, ahead of schedule). Joel is shocked she went through with it, followed by Brad saying it was easy, but then adds he doesn't mean easy as in "your wife's a slut." Brad then explains what happened, and we see a flashback of Brad posing as the pool boy and making small talk with Suzie who's sunbathing in a bikini. He then asks if she has any lotion since he forget his, and we next see him putting some on her back while starting to undo the back of her bikini top. Joel then stops the story there, saying he doesn't want to hear any more (all of that's played for comedy, especially the seduction flashback). Brad then asks Joel if he wants him "to do your wife again."
  • Cindy shows cleavage.
  • Nathan informs Joel that he saw the pool boy (Brad) at his house again, thus informing Joel that his wife is still having an affair. Joel later confronts Brad about that, asking if he had sex with his wife again. Brad says it's no big deal since they already did it once.
  • Suzie shows some cleavage.
  • Joel complains to Dean that he can't believe it was that easy for Brad to seduce Suzie, adding that he (Joel) must be lousy in the sack. But Dean explains that Brad "just crushes ass" and that he "drops it in your wife for free."
  • Dean and his friend tell Joel it's time for the latter to call his dream girl and finally get laid. The friend asks what she looks like, and Joel replies "working class," with that friend asking if that means she's "slutty looking." Joel says yes and that friend says that's the way he likes them.
  • Brian wonders how a guy like Step "with a little dingleberry" could get a girl like Cindy.
  • Joel discovers Brad has visited his wife again (cutting him off on the street as Brad is exiting the neighborhood) and confronts him about that. During this, he tells Brad, "You're nothing more than a little piece of ass."
  • Joel visits Step and tells him he should be careful about Cindy, but Step doesn't understand the gist of that and wonders if she has an STD.
  • Discussing Step's case, Adler does a lot of talking about his client's "balls" and that he'll drop the case if Joel allows Adler to slam his in a door.
  • Joel confronts Suzie, saying she "banged" the pool cleaner and that he (Joel) paid Brad to have sex with her. She then replies with the question that he paid Brad all fifteen times, prompting Joel to say it hasn't even been 15 days since it started and asks, "How can you even sit down?"
  • Cindy starts kissing on Joel (after he confronts her about her stealing) and the scene ends, with sex somewhat implied, but Joel wakes up the next morning in his t-shirt and boxers, surprised that she's gone.
  • A song has the lyrics, "Who were you thinking of when we were making love last night? Was it a good looking stranger or a close friend of mine? You didn't want to quit when we were into it last night."
  • Brad tells Joel that he loves Suzie, but knows he can't have her, with Joel sarcastically replying "You had her 15 times." After Brad leaves, Dean refers to him as "Johnny Horse C*ck."
  • When Joel tells Suzie he hired Brad, she says she knows, but Joel says he's not referring to the pool cleaning or the sex, but at his plant as an employee.
  • SMOKING
  • Adler complains about how long it takes to get cigarettes in a hotel.
  • TENSE FAMILY SCENES
  • Joel isn't happy that Suzie is no longer interested in having sex with him. He then hires Brad to seduce her so that he can have a guilt-free fling with Cindy. He decides against both, but it's too late for the first.
  • Knowing she had an affair but not letting on that he does, Joel is short with Suzie, thus creating some tension particularly as she tries to play nice.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Making bad choices and then having to deal with the related repercussions.
  • Sexless marriages.
  • Joel ending up being a softie toward those who've wronged him in one way or another.
  • Drug use.
  • Affairs.
  • VIOLENCE
  • When Mary doesn't stop the conveyor belts, cases of extract back up and then fall off an elevated track. One worker then slips in the liquid and falls, while Rory stops his forklift short and cases fall off that, resulting in something hitting some mechanical equipment, with a piece shooting off of that and striking Step in the crotch (we see a hole through the back of his pants leg near there). We then hear that he lost one testicle and had the other reattached (all played for comedy).
  • While listening to Brad say on the phone how he seduced Suzie, Joel repeatedly slams the phone receiver down onto his desk in frustration/anger.
  • When Cindy's live-in boyfriend suddenly realizes Joel has been talking about her and wanting to have sex (Joel wasn't aware of that connection either), that man punches Joel (we see the latter's POV of the fist coming his way, but we don't see the impact). Later, Joel has a large black eye from that and states that he got his "ass" kicked.
