QUICK TAKE:
Horror: Residents of a small mining town must contend with a number of grisly murders that seem far too similar to those that occurred there a decade earlier.
PLOT:
In the mining town of Harmony, tragedy struck ten years ago when Tom Hanniger (JENSEN ACKLES), the inexperienced son of the local coal mine owner, caused an accident that killed various people and left one miner, Harry Warden (RICH WALTERS), in a coma. When he came out of that a year later, Harry went on a murderous spree of revenge, with Tom, his girlfriend Sarah (JAIME KING), and her friends Irene (BETSY RUE) and her boyfriend Axel (KERR SMITH) surviving thanks to the work of Sheriff Burke (TOM ATKINS) and Deputy Hinch (BINGO O'MALLEY).

Despite Harry reportedly being killed, Tom disappeared until now, when he unexpectedly returns following the death of his estranged father, with plans of selling the mine. That doesn't sit well with mine official Ben (KEVIN TIGHE) or many of the locals, including Burke and Hinch who've since retired and been replaced by Axel and his deputy, Martin (EDI GATHEGI). Despite having an affair with grocery store worker, Megan (MEGAN BOONE), Axel isn't happy to see Tom either, especially since Axel is now married to Sarah with a kid.

Things become more complicated when it seems that Harry has returned from the grave, as a number of murders -- committed with a mining pickax -- start occurring again. With most everyone thinking that and Tom's return seems more than coincidental, Axel tries to find out who's responsible as the bodies start piling up and Sarah finds herself torn between her husband and her past flame.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're into horror films and/or are fans of anyone in the cast, they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For graphic brutal horror violence and grisly images throughout, some strong sexuality, graphic nudity and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
To avoid spoiling the identity of the killer, final character attributes are not included below.
  • JENSEN ACKLES plays a young man who's returned to the small town as heir to its coal mine that he intends to sell, what with it bringing nothing but bad memories to him regarding its tragic past and many deaths and murders indirectly related to him. Despite the resurgence of such mayhem, he changes his mind upon selling the place and leaving, mainly due to running into Sarah, his former girlfriend. He uses strong profanity.
  • JAIME KING plays his former flame who's now married to Axel with a young son. She runs the local grocery store, and is torn between her husband and Tom when the latter unexpectedly reappears. She uses strong profanity and must contend with the killer's actions and not knowing the murderer's identity.
  • KERR SMITH plays her husband, the local sheriff who isn't happy about Tom's return for a number of reasons, most notably due to worrying about the romantic competition he presents. That's despite Axel having an affair with his wife's employee. He drinks in the past, uses strong profanity, and tries to find and stop the killer.
  • BETSY RUE plays his girlfriend in the past who's now seen having sex with a man in a motel. She uses strong profanity and drinks in the past.
  • EDI GATHEGI plays Axel's deputy who assists him in investigating the homicides.
  • TOM ATKINS plays the former sheriff who thought he had killed the mass-murderer, but now isn't so sure. He drinks some and uses profanity.
  • BINGO O'MALLEY plays his former deputy who similarly isn't happy to see the return of Tom and punches him. He drinks and uses strong profanity.
  • KEVIN TIGHE plays a coal mine official who isn't happy that Tom's returned home with intentions of selling the mine. He uses profanity.
  • MEGAN BOONE plays Sarah's grocery store employee who's having an affair with Axel and has just announced she's pregnant. She uses some profanity.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated horror film. Profanity consists of at least 38 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also present. There's some sexually related dialogue, a sexual encounter is seen (live, and later on tape) with movement, sounds and nudity (breasts, butts), and that same woman is seen fully nude (frontal and rear) both inside that room and out in the parking lot, while another sexual encounter is heavily suggested (involving an affair).

Violence consists of mass murderers killing many people, mostly with a mining pickax, while some fighting, gunfire, and lesser contact also occur. The murders and their aftermath (where torsos have been cut open, and one where a woman has been cut completely in half, and another where a person is partially decapitated, etc.) have extremely bloody/gory results, and that material, various jump scenes, and many moments of potential peril might be unsettling, suspenseful and/or scary to viewers, particularly younger ones and those with low tolerance levels for such mayhem.

Various bad attitudes are present, as is some tense family material, while teen characters drink beer at a party and other drinking occurs, and a person nearly smokes. Some of the behavior might be enticing for some kids to imitate.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, some of the 3-D shots and related camera movement might cause that.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Various teens drink at an outdoor party in the past, and Axel, Irene, Sarah and Tom are among them (the latter hold cans of beer).
  • Ben asks Tom if he wants a drink when the latter shows up at the former's home, and he says yes.
  • On several occasions, Tom takes some sort of prescription medication (for his nerves).
  • Burke and Hinch have drinks in a bar as do others.
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • We see the aftermath of Harry's murder spree upon coming out of his coma. There are bodies scattered about and blood everywhere, including on them, the floor, walls, etc. and dripping from one victim's hand in the foreground of the camera shot. One such victim has been completely cut in half, while another's torso has been cut open (for removal of the heart), all shown in grisly detail.
  • Harry slams a pickax through a guy's head, driving his eyeball out toward the camera and then back into his head when the pickax is pulled out. Other dead people there are also bloody. Harry then jams the blade of a shovel into a young woman's mouth and then bangs the handle end to drive it further into her head, decapitating the top part (it stays on the blade, with bloody results, as the rest of the body falls away). Moments later, blood splatters all over Tom's face when Burke and/or Hinch shoot Harry.
  • The killer slams a pickax down into the top of a man's head, with very bloody results (running down, spurting out, etc.). He then kills a small person with another head shot, and then a third person (with meaty-looking blood splattering onto the wall). We later see the first person's dead body, and then that of the third, and her torso has been cut open.
  • We see crime scene photos of bloody victims.
  • A deputy delivers a Valentine's box to Axel and he notes some blood on the bottom of it. When he opens it, he discovers a bloody human heart inside.
  • The killer slams his pickax through a miner's arm, but that man yanks that out, and the two fight. That ends when the killer stops the pickax with his boot and then kicks it back up into the miner's head, killing him. He then proceeds to strike that miner's body repeatedly with the pickax, with bloody results.
  • We see a nurse stitching up a bloody cut on Tom's arm.
  • Blood spills out onto the floor when the killer pushes a man's head down onto the sharp end of a pickax sticking up from the floor.
  • We see a dead and bloody man's body in the woods.
  • We see a dead and bloody body propped up against an alley wall where a message has been written in blood.
  • The killer strikes Sarah's housekeeper with his pickax, but we don't see the blow. Later, however, a deputy stops the thumping dryer and finds that woman's body, bloody with boiled looking skin, etc.
  • The killer slams his pickax up through a guy's chin and out the front of his face. When he yanks that pickax out, blood and flesh/bone fly out, some hitting the camera.
  • Tom's head is bloody following a car crash.
  • There's some blood on Axel's shirt after he's been hit with the pickax.
  • As a bullet passes through the side of the killer, we see some blood. Later, and following an explosion, he has some blood on his face and head.
  • As seen from the rescuer's point of view, the killer slams his pickax into that man's head, with bloody results.
  • DISRESPECTFUL/BAD ATTITUDE
  • The killers obviously have bad attitudes for their actions.
  • In the past, Axel has a bad/condescending attitude toward Tom, and that resurfaces when Tom does in the present.
  • We see that Axel is cheating on his wife Sarah with her employee Megan (as they get dressed after unseen sex).
  • Hinch isn't happy to see Tom and punches him, followed by some struggling. Another local then grabs Tom and tries to punch him, but Tom ducks, resulting in the man's fist smashing into a wall mirror.
  • Axel states that his late dad, Tom's late dad, and Ben went vigilante on Harry, and killed and buried him long ago.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • The various intended scares might be intensified for some viewers if the film is seen in 3-D.
  • Tom sees a flashlight in the distance at night in the woods and follows that to a seemingly abandoned house. He slowly goes inside and spots a rat feeding on some chocolates from a Valentine's box.
  • Several scenes feature characters aiming their guns at the camera, and when seen in 3-D, the effect might be troubling for some viewers.
  • Hearing something, Hinch loads his shotgun and goes outside, but finds nothing.
  • With his gun drawn and Sarah behind him, Axel slowly walks through an alley at night, looking for the killer and his victim.
  • Burke and a younger female cop slowly approach Sarah's house, guns drawn. She goes inside, while he stays outside and then goes around the porch.
  • Sarah continues to flee from the killer, ending up in a miner locker room, where various uniforms hang from the ceiling, with some falling lower, thus startling her. One then turns out to be the similarly dressed killer, and she flees again.
  • A person warns Sarah that the killer is coming up behind her, and we see just that, but then realize it's just the person's troubled imagination.
  • GUNS/WEAPONS
  • Pickax/Handguns/Shotgun: Carried and/or used to threaten, wound or kill others. See "Violence" for details.

  • In the past, Axel kisses on Irene's neck while waiting for Sarah and Tom to arrive. When the latter do, Irene takes their picture, jokingly telling them to say "Over-the-pants hand job."
  • Sarah shows some cleavage.
  • We see that Axel is cheating on his wife Sarah with her employee Megan. As the latter drops a top down over her, we still see her in her panties, and Axel (who's now dressed) gropes her butt as they embrace. She shows a little cleavage and happily announces that she's pregnant (he's less than thrilled by that news).
  • As Tom checks into a motel, he passes by a room from which a woman's sexual sounds are heard. We then see inside that room and it's Irene having sex with a trucker (he's on top, followed by her getting on top). We see her bare breasts and related movement, hear more sounds, and she says, "I look so hot" while watching herself in the mirror during this. When they're done and as she talks of the history of Valentine's Day including that of secret sexual companions, the man gets dressed (we see his bare butt) and then collects his video camera that was recording their encounter. She's mad and states she's not some hooker, with him throwing some money at her and saying she is now. He leaves and she storms out after him, fully nude (we see full frontal and rear), into the parking lot at night. After the killer strikes, she runs back into the motel room and tries to hide, and we see many more views of her full nudity.
  • A miscellaneous woman shows some cleavage.

  • Sarah questions (in her mind) whether her husband might be the killer.
  • Sarah hits Axel, thinking he's the killer. She then holds his handgun on him, but then does the same to Tom when he shows up.
  • TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT
  • Mass murderers.
  • Coal mining and miners.
  • Affairs.
  • VIOLENCE
  • In the end, not everything that's seen before that really occurs, but we'll report on the incidents as they're shown.
  • There are newspaper and audio accounts of the mine accident in the past (accidentally caused by Tom) that killed various people and left Harry in a coma. During this, we briefly see a flashback to a fiery explosion in a mine tunnel.
  • In the past, Sarah ends up lost in a mine tunnel where other teens are gathering for a party. A guy playfully jumps out to scare her, but masked Harry slams a pickax through that guy's head, driving his eyeball out toward the camera and then back into his head when the pickax is pulled out. Sarah flees, only to discover more dead and bloody bodies, followed by Axel grabbing her and putting his hand over her mouth to muffle her sounds. As they and another woman hide, another guy shows up, draws the attention of Harry, and then tries to flee. But he clotheslines himself and falls to the floor, with Harry slamming his pickax into that guy's head. The other three try to flee, with Harry coming after Axel who falls to the floor. The other young woman hits Harry with a shovel and the two struggle over control of that. He then jams the blade of the shovel into her mouth and then bangs the handle end to drive it further into her head, decapitating the top part (it stays on the blade, with bloody results, as the rest of the body falls away). He then swings his pickax and slices Tom on the back/shoulder (he lives) and then throws that pickax at Axel, Sarah and Irene, with the pickax blasting into and part of the way through the windshield, nearly hitting the young women. Back inside the tunnel, Harry stalks Tom and repeatedly swings his pickax at him. Just when Tom thinks he's going to die, there's a gunshot and blood splatters all of his face (from Burke and/or Hinch shooting Harry). As Harry flees, they shoot him several more times, but he escapes. From all of that and more unseen mayhem, we hear that Harry killed 22 people.
  • Mad at a trucker for treating her like a hooker, Irene follows him into the parking lot (she's fully nude) holding a handgun. He says he knows she won't use it as it's empty, so she throws it at him, hitting him on the head. Just then, the killer slams a pickax down into the top of the man's head, with very bloody results. Irene runs back into the motel room and hides under the bed, with the owner/clerk (a small person) coming in, looking for her dog. She opens a closet and the killer attacks her, jamming his pickax up through her head, smashing her head into the ceiling. He then comes after Irene, grabbing her, with her kicking at him. He then removes the mattress and box spring, leaving just the open mesh frame between them. He repeatedly strikes his pickax at her through that, both on the floor and up against the wall, finally striking her (with meaty-looking blood splattering onto the wall).
  • Hinch isn't happy to see Tom and punches him, followed by some struggling. Another local then grabs Tom and tries to punch him, but Tom ducks, resulting in the man's fist smashing into a wall mirror.
  • The killer swings his pickax at Tom and gets him in the arm, and is then kicked back and then locked into a cage in the mine tunnel. The killer then slams his pickax through a miner's arm, but that man yanks that out, and the two fight, with the miner getting control of the pickax that he repeatedly tries to hit the killer with, but misses. This ends when the killer stops the pickax with his boot and then kicks it back up into the miner's head, killing him. He then proceeds to strike that miner's body repeatedly with the pickax. The killer then leaves and others rescue Tom, but one's upset and pushes him back against the cage, with Tom shaving him back.
  • Mad that Tom is trying to get back Sarah, Axel punches him in the face and overturns a table before his deputy stops him.
  • The killer hits an older man on the back with his pickax, sending him to the floor. The next blow misses, with the pickax being imbedded in the floor, and the killer then grabs that older man and slowly pushes his head toward the sharp end, and then shoves the head onto it, with lots of blood spilling out onto the floor.
  • Sarah and Megan hear odd noises in the grocery store after closing. We then see that the killer is there, followed by the lights going out and them eventually spotting him. They flee, he grabs one and tries to hit her with his pickax and then slams her back into glass freezer or refrigerator display door, but she hits him with something and flees. The other then hits him with a mop, but he grabs and breaks the handle, followed by them fleeing into an office and locking and barricading the door. As Megan tries to unlock the padlocked grate over the window, the killer repeatedly slams his pickax through the door, making the hole bigger each time. Megan then goes out the window first, but Sarah pauses when they realize he's no longer at the door. Just then, he grabs and yanks Megan from the window, and then gets the front of Sarah's shirt with his pickax, with her getting cut as she pulls away.
  • We see a dead and bloody body propped up against an alley wall (from an unseen murder).
  • Thinking that Tom might be the killer, Sarah grabs the steering wheel and the two struggle over control of the moving car that then crashes into a tree, with a branch coming through the windshield. She gets out and flees, while he's injured but alive.
  • The killer is behind Sarah and swings his pickax at her. The two struggle and she hits him with something, and then throws a lamp at him before jumping out a window and landing/rolling on the ground hard. She then flees through the woods.
  • Sarah hits Axel, thinking he's the killer. She then holds his handgun on him, but then does the same to Tom when he shows up.
  • Axel and Tom fight, with both delivering punches, as well as shoving and struggling with the other. During this, Axel tries to hit Tom with the pickax, while Tom nearly strangles Axel before the latter knees him away and hits him with a shovel. Tom then hits Axel in the side with the pickax before fleeing as Sarah shoots at him.
  • With just one bullet left, Sarah watches as the killer approaches, breaking mine tunnel lights one by one as he nears her. She then fires her shot that goes through his side and strikes a gas canister behind him. The resultant gas leak then ignites and explodes, blowing the killer through the air.
  • As seen from the rescuer's point of view, the killer slams his pickax into that man's head, with bloody results.
