QUICK TAKE:
Sci-fi: After heading to Mars to investigate some deadly occurrences there, a small squad of Marines tries to rescue some workers from mutant monsters that they must kill to prevent them from returning to Earth.
PLOT:
Twenty years after a portal was found on Earth that leads to near instantaneous travel to Mars, a group of scientists and others -- such as Dr. Carmack (ROBERT RUSSELL) and Samantha Grimm (ROSAMUND PIKE) among others -- work on the red planet, hoping to find out who or what built the portal and what happened to them.

Then something goes terribly wrong, with various people there being killed by various monsters. With the Olduvai Research Station in lockdown, the Marines of the Rapid Response Tactical Squad back on Earth are called to duty. Led by Sarge (THE ROCK), the small squad consists of John Grimm (KARL URBAN), Samantha's long-estranged brother; Duke (RAZ ADOTI) who ends up sweet on her; religious Goat (BEN DANIELS); Asian Mac (YAO CHIN); tough guy Destroyer (DeOBIA OPAREI); rookie The Kid (AL WEAVER) and the slimy Portman (RICHARD BRAKE).

Upon arriving, they tell wheelchair-bound Pinky (DEXTER FLETCHER) to watch the door, and then enter the station where they meet Samantha and a number of other survivors. As she races to continue her research work that's at the point of a major breakthrough, the Marines set out on a search and rescue mission. Yet, when they encounter various mutant monsters with super-human strength, their objective changes to that of kill or be killed. From that point on, they do what they must to stay alive and keep the monsters from returning to Earth via the portal.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?
If they're fans of this video game or others, or of anyone in the cast, it's a good bet they might.
WHY THE MPAA RATED IT: R
For strong violence/gore and language.
CAST AS ROLE MODELS:
  • THE ROCK plays the Marine sergeant who leads the small squad to Mars on a search and rescue mission that then switches to a kill everything objective. He's no-nonsense in his approach, doesn't suffer fools, uses strong profanity and kills monsters and humans alike without any remorse.
  • KARL URBAN plays one of his Marines who's reluctant to travel to the station due to some event that occurred there years ago that's since led to him being estranged from his sister who still works there. He battles various monsters and zombie type humans while trying to save others.
  • ROSAMUND PIKE plays his sister who works on the station researching the former inhabitants and comes to a startling discovery regarding the mutant monsters attacking them.
  • RICHARD BRAKE plays the slimy, wisecracking Marine who uses strong profanity and gives some sort of drug to their rookie member played by AL WEAVER.
  • RAZ ADOTI plays the Marine who's sweet on Samantha and uses profanity under duress.
  • BEN DANIELS plays the religious Marine who punishes himself for taking the Lord's name in vain.
  • DeOBIA OPAREI and YAO CHIN play other Marines in the rescue squad.
  • DEXTER FLETCHER plays a communications man who's missing the lower half of his body and is entrusted with keeping the monsters from escaping from the station.

    HOW OTHERS RATED THIS MOVIE

Curious if this title is entertaining, any good, and/or has any artistic merit?
Then read OUR TAKE of this film.

(Note: The "Our Take" review of this title examines the film's artistic merits and does not take into account any of the possibly objectionable material listed below).

    OUR WORD TO PARENTS:
The following is a brief summary of the content found in this R-rated, sci-fi horror film. Profanity consists of at least 25 "f" words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also uttered. Some non-explicit, sexually related dialogue is present, as is a life-size poster or cut-out of a scantly clad woman showing some partial nudity. Some men are seen shirtless and a possible, split-second, distant view of a bare breast on a dead body might be visible (or it could have been something else).

All sorts of lethal and extremely bloody and/or gory violence is present (stemming from humans killing monsters and human zombies, and vice-versa) with some dismemberment, while some brutal fighting also occurs as does shooting of already dead bodies. Various wounds and dead monsters are grisly in appearance (including a graphic autopsy of the latter).

That material, along with the appearance of various monsters and moments of potential peril may be unsettling, suspenseful or downright scary to some viewers (mainly younger ones and/or those with low tolerance levels for such mayhem, while those who don't fall into those categories probably won't have the same reaction).

Some bad attitudes are present (including a Marine who decides to kill the victims) as is some crude, scatological material. One character gives another some sort of drug that leaves the second one high, a character is estranged from his sister and haunted by some event from their past, and some potentially imitative behavior is also present.

If you're still concerned about the film and its appropriateness for yourself or anyone else in your home who may be interested in seeing it, we suggest that you take a closer look at our detailed listings for more specific information regarding the film's content.

For those concerned with bright flashes of light on the screen, there's some of that late in the film in a dark scene.

For those prone to visually induced motion sickness, a several-minute, point of view sequence (where the camera whips and moves around through various close quarters) could induce that effect.

    ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE
  • Portman jokes that when he's on leave he's going to get a bottle of tequila and lock himself in a motel room with three "she-boys."
  • The Kid asks Portman, "Do you have any?" Portman then gives him some sort of unknown drug.
  • John notes The Kid's eyes and asks "Are you high?"
  • BLOOD/GORE
  • A gets her arm into an elevator door just as the two metal halves close on it, cutting it and spilling blood. We then see her arm go up as she's attacked by something on the other side before it's then severed and drops to the floor (we see the bloody stump as the hand briefly twitches).
  • We see that Pinky is missing the entire lower half of his body (he's attached to a futuristic wheelchair of sorts) from a previous, unseen portal trip malfunction.
  • Two of the men vomit after traveling through the space portal.
  • We see biological specimens in large containers, looking like body organs with some beating and/or pulsating.
  • The men find some clothing with some blood on it.
  • We see Carmack looking psychotic and bloodied (including a bad gash on his neck), all while holding the above severed hand. He then suddenly rips off his own ear, resulting in a bloody/gory mess on the side of his head and clothing.
  • Goat takes a large knife and cuts his own forearm with it for taking God's name in vain. We see scars from other such cuts there and then see that he's cutting a bloody cross symbol on his arm.
  • We see blood inside some now empty animal cages as what look like organs hang on some of the metal. We then see a sick and bloody guy grab a rat and bite off half of it, sucking the long tail up into his mouth. He then charges two Marines with a raised knife causing them to riddle him with gunfire, blasting him back across a room.
  • Hearing something above them in a vent, Destroyer slowly pokes his head up into an opening, with a monkey then jumping out at him. He and Sarge then riddle the monkey and vent with massive machine gun fire. We then see the dead and bloody monkey as well as some very thick blood dripping down onto Sarge who examines it.
  • We see thick blood being pulled into a large vial from a syringe in an arm.
  • Some of the men look down into a sewer, with one sarcastically commenting on really "being in the sh*t." We then see them wading through the thick water/sewage.
  • A monster attacks one man, biting into his neck and seemingly leaving its tongue in his neck (all with very bloody results).
  • We see some blood on a medical bed.
  • We see a needle being inserted into some skin.
  • A creature decapitates a man with one blow. We see the severed and bloody head as well as the headless body with blood around it.
  • We see Samantha performing an autopsy on a bloody monster, using a chest-spreader of sorts to open the torso. She then puts her hands down inside the very bloody opening, pulling out all sorts of bloody and gooey organs from inside it.
  • We see a body bag sitting up behind Samantha and Duke and then the zombie like man (who has bloody cuts and gashes on his face and other parts) get out and slowly lumber over toward them. As Duke prepare his gun, it then repeatedly and purposefully slams headfirst into the thick glass separating them, eventually killing itself (there's blood on the window, zombie and the floor around it).
  • Portman tells the others that he has "to take a dump." When another asks "Now?" he says "Unless you want me sh*tting my pants right here." He then goes into the bathroom, enters the stall and is seated, but we don't see or hear any related activity.
  • Sarge finds and then uses a severed hand to gain entry into a secure area.
  • A man who's been attacked is very bloody.
  • We see a bloody monster that's missing an ear and is stuck halfway through a wall. Sarge then walks up and shoots it in the head at point blank range, killing it (with very bloody results).
  • A man is bloody in a video playback.
  • Samantha shows that a monster's severed tongue reacts to one bit of human brain matter dropped down onto it (it suddenly rears up) but not another.
  • Samantha has various bits of blood on her lab coat.
  • We see many dead people lying on the floor.
  • The remaining Marines walk among various dead bodies, shooting into them to make sure they're dead (adding to their bloody appearance - we also see a new bloody bullet hole in one's head from one such shot).
  • Sarge shoots and kills a wounded and bloody victim.
  • We see more dead and bloody victims lying on the floor, including one that's missing part of its leg.
  • Sarge shoots and mortally wounds one of his own men who refuses his order, with very bloody results (out of the man's mouth and squirting out from his bad neck wound).
  • Many bloody zombies are shot dead, but one Marine is then grabbed from below and yanked through a grate-type floor, with blood squirting up as he disappears from sight.
  • A bullet ricochets off a wall and hits John, severely wounding him (he's very bloody there as well as on his face).
  • We see a little blood come out as Samantha puts a syringe into John's skin.
  • We see the point of view of one man as he goes on a rampage through the station, shooting and killing many zombie creatures and monsters with a variety of weapons and a bevy of gory and/or bloody results. Some of that includes shooting a zombie, causing his head to explode; seeing a rat chewing in a dead man's eye socket as the dead man hangs upside down; shooting another coming at him with an ax that then ends up in the zombie's head; shooting one coming at him with a chainsaw; and an explosive going off and vaporizing a monster (sending blood and guts raining down).
  • A huge bulldog type monster with massive teeth attacks John in the above POV sequence, with it biting at his legs, etc. He repeatedly takes a chainsaw to it, cutting it (with bloody results) as it continues to attack him until he finally shoots and kills it.
  • A man has a bloody neck wound.
  • A man impales another's hand with the sharp end of a metal rod (we see it go through).

  • Not realizing she's his sister, one of the guys asks John why he left Samantha, who he refers to as a "fine piece of ass."
  • Portman refers to Pinky (who's missing the lower half of his body) as a "gimp."
  • Those responsible for the genetic tampering (not seen) have bad attitudes for what they ended up creating (resulting in many deaths).
  • Sarge decides that everyone beyond them must be killed as any could be infected. Accordingly, he shoots a wounded victim and then shoots and kills one of his own men who refuses his order to do the same to others.
  • FRIGHTENING SCENES
  • Scenes listed under "Violence," "Blood/Gore" and "Jump Scenes" may be unsettling, suspenseful or scary to younger viewers and/or those with low tolerance levels for such material.
  • We hear some screaming on a recording from the previous victims.
  • The men slowly make their way through the dark corridors with guns drawn and lights mounted on them.
  • We see the ghastly looking skeletal remains of some humanoid creature found on Mars (and it's holding the skeleton of its baby).

Samantha slips back through a wall (that goes from "noise" to solid and back with the throw of a switch), followed by Duke after he shoots the creature that then tries to come through the wall just as it goes solid, trapping it halfway through. Its long tongue then comes out and lands on the floor near them.

She gets her arm in just as the two metal halves close on it, cutting it and spilling blood. We then see her arm go up as she's attacked by something on the other side before it's then severed and drops to the floor (we see the bloody stump as the hand briefly twitches).
