DVD REVIEW FOR
"RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER"

(1964) (Animated Holiday Classic) (Not Rated)

Length Screen Format(s) Languages Subtitles Sound Sides
52 minutes Full Frame (1.33:1) English English Dolby Digital 2.0 1

Plot: Shunned by other reindeer due to his shining red nose, a young reindeer feels like a misfit until he helps Santa deliver his Christmas gifs.

AUDIO/VIDEO ELEMENTS:
In reviewing such titles that debuted on TV long, long ago, one must remember the age and production quality present at the time. Notwithstanding that, the picture here, while serviceable, isn't anywhere near that of more recently produced releases. Various film artifacts are present (scratches and other blips) as are various digital artifacts (including rather noticeable pixelation in certain scenes). The color reproduction is decent, but certainly not vibrant and the overall film simply looks old. Regarding the audio (and the same time/production qualifiers as above), it sounds rather flat and lacking in dynamic range, but the program's target audience (little kids) won't mind one bit.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • 11-minute introduction by Arthur Rankin (who produced the short) about the film, its story and characters.
  • Rudolph trivia game - onscreen textual questions and answers.
  • "Fame and Fortune" song (from the film).
  • Original TV promo from 1964.
  • Other titles from Golden Books Family Entertainment (a running compilation of other titles).
  • Readspeak action captions (animated dialogue that's presented one word at a time, near the talking characters' mouths, designed for young kids).
