VIDEO:
(C-) Since the quality of the original theatrical production wasn't spectacular, the same consequently holds true for what appears on this disc (ie. It's nowhere near the ultra-sharp quality found on newer releases). Fortunately, and somewhat surprisingly, the picture doesn't contain too many distracting film artifacts (scratches and other "blips"), although the included theatrical trailer looks like it's been run through the ringer a few too many times.

In addition, a great amount of compression-related pixelation occurs throughout many parts of the disc (especially in shots of walls and other lighter, solid colored sections), and in some scenes is quite bad and extremely distracting.

AUDIO:
(B-) The audio, presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 (and not the standard 5.1), lacks any sort of great dynamic range and features dialogue that's often quite flat sounding (mostly due to the original source material), but does feature a fun soundtrack.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • "The Yearbook" An "Animal House" Reunion: A 45 minute documentary featuring interviews and recollections from the cast and crew, as well as behind the scenes footage and clips from the film.
  • Production Notes — 9 pages of on-screen text.
  • Cast and crew filmographies and biographies (on-screen text).
  • Theatrical trailer.
  • COMMENTS:
Wildly uneven and not as much fun as I recalled from seeing it during my own school days (it obviously plays best to those in "similar" settings or circumstances — ie. current students), it is a blast to see Belushi at work as well as the wide range of performers (Kevin Bacon, Tom Hulce, Karen Allen, etc...) who debuted here and went on to bigger and better things. Fans of the film will surely enjoy the 45-minute documentary of the film that includes some rare behind the scenes footage of Belushi.
