PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(B+) Played out in a cold and dreary hometown, the picture is purposefully bleak looking and void of any substantial use of colors behind the ever present cold, blueish hue. The other colors that are present, however, are vibrant. While not up to the quality standards of today's discs, the picture looks okay despite a less than razor-sharp transfer that also shows some signs of compression- related pixelation in various scenes.
AUDIO:
(B+) Despite the absence of a 5.1 soundtrack (we get the old Dolby Surround standard), the disc still sounds okay. The dialogue is crisp and easy to understand, and the songs — including the real and improvised cast versions of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" — sound good.

COMMENTS:
Helmed by Ted Demme, this is a fun and witty look — notwithstanding the appropriate, but possibly misleading title — at the lives of a group of young men who still haven't grown up. While nothing earthshattering ever occurs, the film is filled with a spectacular cast — including the likes of Timothy Hutton, Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, Rosie O'Donnell, Michael Rapaport, Lauren Holly, Natalie Portman, Martha Plimpton and Annabeth Gish — and plenty of well-written dialogue and fun interaction between their characters.

This is a bare-bones release, however, in that it's not much more than a standard VHS video appearing on DVD. Supplemental materials are nonexistent and even the audio — while still serviceable — isn't even available in the now standard 5.1 version. While fans of the title and/or of anyone in the impressive cast may wish to add to this to their collection, it's highly unlikely it will be a favorite among casual DVD collectors.
