PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(A) Despite some compression-generated pixelation, as well as the random film artifact (scratches or other blips) — neither of which is overly noticeable nor distracting — the film is otherwise quite sharp.

Outdoor scenes show a great deal of detail as well as vibrant colors, especially the lush greens of the countryside. Although the flesh tones occasionally look a bit too warm, it works for the film's "period" feel and was probably present in the theatrical print.

AUDIO:
(B+) While certainly not a demonstration disc for a DVD's sonic capabilities, the dialogue is crisp and the musical score is appropriately rich. However, the disc's Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack — along with the lack of spatial effects or impressive dynamic range (to be expected in a period romantic drama) — won't impress many people (although the audience for this movie isn't comprised of your typical high end audio/video buffs, so the point is rather mute).
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • Theatrical Trailer.
  • COMMENTS:
Overall, the disc is nicely done and the film's artistic level (and Paltrow's performance) will make most viewers forgive the film's otherwise lackluster presentation (with the theatrical trailer being the only added bonus).
