PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(A) Beyond just some ever-so-slight occurrences of compression-related pixelation, the picture looks great. While the colors are somewhat muted throughout much of it (purposefully done for the original theatrical presentation), the image quality is otherwise razor sharp and shows a great deal of detail.
AUDIO:
(A+) Yet another demonstration caliber audio track. From David Arnold's great score to Sheryl Crow's title number, and with full use of the audio's dynamic range featuring some great sound and spatial effects, this disc simply sounds tremendous.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • Running audio commentary by director Roger Spottiswoode (along with Dan Petrie, Jr.).
  • Running audio commentary by stunt director Vic Armstrong and producer Michael G. Wilson.
  • Another audio track containing only the isolated musical score.
  • Parallel storyboard feature -- With this feature activated and using the angle change feature, viewers can see the original storyboard sketch overlaying the live action scene that it inspired (best used in slow motion since the sketches come and go rather quickly, and they're only available for select scenes).
  • Sheryl Crow music video of the movie's title track.
  • "Secrets of 007" -- 45 minute documentary overview of the Bond series (with emphasis on this film, but many clips from and facts regarding the previous entries).
  • Interview with composer David Arnold -- 2 minutes.
  • Special Effects Reel -- 2+ minutes (shows the before and after shots with and without the special effects -- no narration).
  • Theatrical and teaser trailers.
  • "Gadgets" -- Brief on-screen and verbal narration describing several gadgets -- the Sea-Vac, BMW and Cell Phone -- that Bond uses in the film.
  • 12 Page Booklet with facts and trivia about the film series.
  • COMMENTS:
Truly the first great DVD to be released that then set the benchmark for later "special edition" versions of movies, this is a must-have disc for fans of the Bond series or movies in general. The varied audio tracks (from various people involved with the production and another featuring only the score) are great, the interface is clever, and there's more than enough supplemental material to satiate the true Bond fans out there.

To top it off, the movie -- while not exactly offering up anything new to this venerable series -- is nonetheless a blast to watch, and Brosnan continues to prove that he's the best runner up to Mr. Connery in playing 007. Sure, all of it's goofy, outrageous, and nowhere near realistic, but that's what makes it so much fun and fans of the series should find this release to their liking.
