PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(A) Much like most of New Line's other DVD releases, the picture here is fantastic. Sharp, highly detailed and featuring strong vibrant colors, the only detriment is an extremely slight overall pixelated look that slightly mars the otherwise great picture (although many viewers might not even notice it).
AUDIO:
(A) While one doesn't expect a film of this genre to have a powerful audio track, what occurs here is decent. The dialogue is crisp and easy to understand, the small collection of songs are good, but not overpowering, and the few sound effects that are present (thunder, etc...) also sound good.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene (with moving images).
  • Cast filmographies and biographies (on-screen text).
  • Running audio commentary by director Barry Levinson & star Dustin Hoffman.
  • Theatrical trailer.
  • "The Line Between Truth and Fiction" — 9 "chapters" of on-screen text (33 pages) discussing the relationship between Hollywood and the media.
  • "From Washington to Hollywood and Back" — 24+ minute interview with Barry Levinson, Tom Brokaw, Dee Dee Myers and others about the Washington/Hollywood connection.
  • "Macy to Mamet" - 5+ minute interview with actor William H. Macy about co-screenwriter and playwright David Mamet.
  • COMMENTS:
Nearly everything about this film is perfect, including a short running time that prevents the satire from becoming stale or running out of steam. Featuring impressive performances, sharp direction, and wittily barbed writing, this is easily the best satire to come down the pike in years. The only bad thing about it is that it may just be closer to the truth about politics than many people would like to believe. If you're in the mood for some clever and quite amusing satire, make sure you see this film (that comes packaged in a high quality video transfer).
