PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(A) With only a few instances of slight pixelation, the disc's picture quality is otherwise excellent (and the slow motion effects are perfect for analyzing -- frame by frame -- all of the goo and gore that permeates the story).
AUDIO:
(A) Full dynamic range represented -- yet another demo disc for displaying DVD's sound quality.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene (where each selection actually shows a runnning clip in a small box).
  • Running commentary by Snipes, Dorff, and the film's writer, cinematographer, production designer, and producer describing the production.
  • Running comentary by the film's composer with only the isolated musical score playing during the film.
  • "La Magra" (14+ minutes). Deleted scenes, an alternate ending and interviews with various people behind the production.
  • "Designing Blade" (22+ minutes). Interviews and material on production design, make-up and special effects of the title character.
  • "The Origins of Blade" (12+ minutes). Interviews with various people about "dark" comics.
  • "The Blood Tide" (20+ minutes). Look at vampire mythology with interviews.
  • "House of Erebus." Text descriptions of 12 different vampire "houses."
  • "Pencil to Post." Text and sketches for both the comic book and movie (several pages each for varying stages of development plus text interviews with the film's concept illustrator, and comic guru Stan Lee).
  • Cast & crew biographies and filmographies (text).
  • Theatrical trailer.
  • DVD-ROM (computer): Watch the movie, read the screenplay (with immediate links to corresponding scenes in the movie), an animated short, a look at the largest comic book convention, and the "Vampire Bulletin Board System" (Internet).
  • COMMENTS:
While we weren't overly impressed with the film in general artistic terms, the DVD is a must for fans of the movie, and showcases what can be done with additional material to supplement the film. Yet another winning DVD from New Line Home Video.
