PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(A-) Despite some occasionally visible pixelation (seen on solid colored walls and shots of the sky), an odd digital artifact (a horizontal band that runs across the screen in one brief scene), and purposefully scratchy looking footage, the transfer here is quite sharp and features abundantly vibrant colors and plenty of detail.
AUDIO:
(A+) Featuring plenty of doo-wop hits, the audio sounds great and displays a pleasant sounding, loud and full dynamic range soundtrack.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene.
  • Cast & Crew filmographies and biographies (on-screen text).
  • Running audio commentary by director Gregory Nava, writer Tina Andrews and producer Paul Hall.
  • "Rock 'n' Roll Review" — 6 chapters of on-screen text about Frankie Lymon and production notes concerning this film.
  • Theatrical trailer.
  • COMMENTS:
While moderately entertaining simply for the music and nostalgic look back to the heyday of doowop (which has been energetically captured here), the film often feels very disjointed, haphazard, and occasionally suffers from overacting from its attractive and talented cast.

Even so, the transfer to DVD is very good and should please fans of the film or that era in musical history. The "behind the scenes" narration about the film's production (by the director, writer, and producer) is very insightful and a "must-listen" for film buffs and aspiring filmmakers.
