PLOT & PARENTAL REVIEW

VIDEO:
(B) At times the Pan & Scan (full screen only) image is quite sharp (most notably in outdoor scenes that exhibit a great deal of detail), but at others, it shows signs of fuzziness or haziness that detracts from the overall viewing pleasure. Some compression-related pixelation occurs (on solid and light-colored parts of the picture), as well as some odd digital artifacts (most notably around people's shoulders with lighter backgrounds around them, and those pesky picture elements that appear frozen -- and actually are -- instead of looking like a complete "live" picture). In addition, the picture's white level occasionally looks over-modulated (ie. the whites appear too white).
AUDIO:
(A) The audio, while not quite of demonstration caliber, is quite solid, with a full dynamic range and a great sounding -- if not purposefully imitative -- soundtrack playing throughout.
EXTRAS:
  • Scene selection/Jump to any scene (with moving clips from the movie for each selection).
  • Cast biography and filmography (on-screen text).
  • "Production Notes" -- 3 "making of" featurettes (around 1:30, 1:30, & 2:00 minutes each).
  • Trivia Game -- For Computer DVD players (not reviewed here).
  • Slide Show -- 44 still images
  • Visual F/X -- Visual Effects Supervisor Lee Wilson discusses the film's visual effects (8 minutes).
  • Cast Interview (4 minutes -- and starts very abruptly, as if in the middle of the interview).
  • Theatrical Trailer & TV Spot for this film.
  • Additional trailers for: "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Wild America," "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "True Romance," "Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls" and "Incognito."
  • COMMENTS:
Although the disc's supplemental material isn't tremendous (but is obviously better than nothing), it seems odd that all of it was added when the studio decided not to present the film in its original theatrical widescreen aspect ratio (or at least make it an option with the pan & scan version). Otherwise, fans of the movie (of which there weren't that many based on its box office return) may enjoy this disc (although we found the laughs still mostly lacking -- despite the clever attempts -- the second time around viewing the picture).
