Plot: Drama: The rise of a streetwise Philly fighter to world champion is chronicled in this collection of all 5 "Rocky" films.
AUDIO/VIDEO ELEMENTS:
The first film - the one that apparently received the re-mastering treatment -- looks good, but not terrific (mostly because much of it was purposefully made to look drab and murky). Color reproduction is solid, but vibrant materials are mostly kept to a minimum until near the end. The audio has also been remixed into a 5.1 mix, but nevertheless sounds flat except for the brief musical bits (the opening horn and later Rocky score). The second film shows more pixelation - particularly in full screen mode where it's rather obvious on walls and other solid colored sections of the picture. The audio, back to a 2.0 mix, sounds okay for its original day and age, but comes off as rather flat.
The subsequent discs offer varying degrees of picture quality (at times very sharp - particularly in brightly lit outdoor scenes - but at others the image is rather murky and drab). The audio also varies, returning to the 5.1 mix for discs 3 and 4, but then goes back to the old 2.0 one for the last film. The score and the various songs, however, have that CD quality sound (on 3 and 4), and more spatial and surround effects are in place in these later films where such mixing became more commonplace. While nothing overly remarkable, that does give those latter films a more noticeable sense of aural depth.
